This class is a difficult class, especially for those who are are not good with math. However, it is all very logical thinking, and Erickson is a great professor. I studied a lot for the two midterms and did well, but the final killed me. It is not always the most interesting material, but you will learn a lot, and it helped me greatly with an internship last summer. All comm school kids have to take it, but I recommend it for econ majors or anyone who thinks they want to pursue a degree in finance.
Everyone tells the horror stories of how bad Accounting is but don't let that intimidate you. Just put in the time to fully understand the concepts and practice with numbers that vary from the problem sets. I personally think there are far harder classes at UVA than accounting. I got a B+ and I was pleased with that
Professor Erickson's class consists of two multiple choice exams (25% each), online problem sets (10%), and a multiple choice final (40%). Attending class is extremely important because she explains concepts extremely well and will review old test problems. Her exams are tough but fair. Use her old practice problems because the new ones are extremely similar. Reading the book can be helpful, but sometimes it's overly complicated. Listen when she says that something is important because often that will appear on the test.
Mary was great. She definitely knows what she is talking about and tries to make everything as clear as possible. She welcomes any questions and makes sure people are following. If you do take this class, take it with her and you will be prepared for the tests. (Which aren't THAT terrible). The homework is annoying, but you can go to the TA's office hours and they will help you out.
