While Professor Erickson is really nice and makes class bearable, her tests are incredibly difficult. By far the hardest class I have taken yet at UVA. Unless you are pre-comm, DON'T take this class. However, if you do have to take it, just make sure to prepare well for her tests, they are harder than you'd think. This class is definitely a weed out class, so be prepared for it to hurt your GPA at least a little bit.
Hard class, and is definitely a weed out class for the Commerce school. Attend class, because she does a ton of practice problems that are usually on the test with just different numbers. The homework is usually easy just takes a lot of time, and can sometimes be very confusing. Erickson is a good professor, and knows what she is talking about.
Financial Accounting is a very difficult subject. As a Comm School weed out course, it is understandably difficult to receive a high grade. That being said, Mary Erickson does her best to make sure everyone is grasping the material she is teaching. She provides great lecture notes on Collab that really help as a supplement to the book. Exams are difficult (to be expected), but grades are really helped by the 20% cushion she provides for the homework (weekly assignments through Cengage, which suck). Don't take the course if you don't need to, and don't expect it to be a cake walk. Otherwise, enjoy!
While this class is dry and relatively unexciting (it is accounting, after all), Erickson is a great teacher and gets across what she needs to teach you. There are lots of examples and practice questions in class, and the tests are almost exactly like the old exams she puts on Collab. The midterms are reasonable in difficulty, while the final is noticeably harder. Our class was uncurved, and every test question is worth a percent of your grade, so the tests are cut-throat. If you can grind it out, a satisfying Comm pre-req.
Attend lecture, pay attention, practice the problems she gives outside of class, and be prepared to put in a lot of time to get a good grade. Although I didn't do so well, I have to say that her tests, although a little tough, are definitely very fair and are representative of the material she teaches in lectures. She is definitely willing to help out, and the curve for those below the average is very generous.
The homework is super tedious and doesn't translate to anything that you will be tested one. Ericsson is a good professor, but if you dont like accounting its going to be horrible with who ever you take it with. It's a super competitive class because of all the pre-comm students, so if you are just looking to take it to learn about accounting you should take it off cycle. The exams are really tough.
Honestly, the difficulty of this class was over-hyped. I took Applied Calc 2 last year and that class was way harder than accounting. That being said, I put a TON of effort into this class (Read textbook every week, did all textbook study probs, all online homework 100%, always went to class, took great notes) and I actually ended up with an A+! It's not hard with multiple choice finals that only have 3 answer option for each question (A,B or C ~ 33% chance of getting it right!)
I would recommend refreshing some basic COMM 1800 vocab before the class begins. The math involved is all basic algebra, so if you've ever taken a math class at UVa this is much easier. That being said, there is a lot of unique rules and things to memorize that make accounting tricky. You can re-do online homework as many times as you want up until the due date so everyone should get 100% on those! If you study the practice exams she gives out beforehand, they are VERY similar to the actual ones, so if you really focus on those and make sure you understand them, you'll be fine. Erickson is a good professor, and I would recommend taking it with her! That being said, I would not recommend taking this class unless you're pre-comm or a business minor. If you've never even heard the words 'accounts payable' or 'retained earnings' before, I would reconsider your decision to take this class.
This class is very, very difficult. Erickson is a great teacher, explains things well and gives plenty of practice problems. Unfortunately, the homework does not related AT ALL to the tests and often it uses different formulas than the ones we go over in class. Midterms are 25 questions, 3 options each, no curve. I felt like I prepared more for this course than any in the past, and still could not get above a B. The second midterm is much harder than the first and the final is about on par with the second midterm. Only take if you are pre-comm. Recommend for the teacher, not for the material. Getting a B will take work.
