COMM 201 is a necessary evil for Pre Comm majors, somewhat (who am I kidding very) dry subject material. Gets very difficult as time goes by, 1st test is easy, 2nd is still not too tough but final is comprehensive...and KILLER. Got a B- which Erickson says is class average, wish I would have studied more for final. Usually curves class grades up 1/3 letter (C+ to B-, A- to A etc.)
This class was really strange. Erickson is a great professor but the book is absolutely dreadful. I realized after the second exam that you can do really well on the exams by just skimming the book once and then studying lecture notes exclusively. Erickson is really nice though and does what she can to make accounting interesting (it's just not an inherently interesting topic, in my opinion). Tests are okay -- no real surprises -- but the final is a bit tricky because it pulls a lot of info from the book. Cumulative grades are generally curved up a 3rd of a grade (i.e. from a B to a B+ or a B+ to an A-) after the final. It's not that hard, but it takes a while to figure out how to approach the class.
If you are not pre-comm - don't do it.
If you are not sure about comm - take it over the summer.
If you are determined pre-comm - well, you can't avoid it.
My life was totally miserable taking this class. The examples and HW she gives are MUCH easier than the actual exams, which try to trick you more than anything else. The first 2 exams make you think you are ok, but you're not. You will not be ok - unless you are an engineer, good at math, or a natural accountant.
I warn you, don't kill your grade for this class. It is not worth it. It is unecessary pain. Thank goodness though, that it helped me find out that I absolutely hate everything and anything having to do with accounting or business.
