Bateman is a great guy but this class BLOWS. Unless you enjoy frantically panning through your notes (which unless you wrote down EVERYTHING the speaker or Bateman said that day, your notes are insufficient) to make sure you remember the smallest details of a lecture that will show up on tests, I would discourage taking this class.
I very much enjoyed going to this class. The lectures analyze real-world problems and decisions in the business world. The tests are tricky though because they will have questions along the lines of, "In class, I gave a lecture on this topic. I listed seven bullets on the concluding slide... list five of them." The tests sometimes seem to test memorization, rather than understanding of the information discussed at length in class. Aside from that, the guest speakers are awesome. There was a guest speakers once every three or four lectures. This class is mandatory if you want to apply to the McIntire Leadership minor. Bateman is a laid back guy outside of class, and has cheesy jokes in class. He is the man to you if you did well in this class and he admits into the minor.
How to do well in this class:
1) Go to lecture. Write down "lessons" from the guest speakers or films and record all the info on Bateman's slides.
2) Memorize almost everything in the readings. Sometimes he asks big, overarching questions; other times he asks for very specific words / small lists embedded in a book chapter. Get your notecards out.
3) Occasionally contribute to class discussion. If he knows your name, you're more likely to get into the minor. And, he claims, extra credit.
Once you figure out his style the class isn't that hard. A few key things, you need to go to class and take good detailed notes. On top of that do the readings and underline important things (they're not long). For tests you need to go back and memorize your underline and what seems important for class because the tests will be fill in the blank
This class was great except for the midterm and final. The test was list after list not relating to a lot of in class material. You learn so much in the class but very little is found on the final or midterm. The test consist of list from the textbook and online material which is very frustrating. However, if you are good at memorizing the class is great because you do learn a lot in the actually class and a lot of great guest lecturers.
Professor Bateman is very nice and funny. His lectures are entertaining and he also incorporates guest lecturers, movies and in-class discussions with other students. The tests can be a bit specific to the book readings, however. Professor Bateman is also very accessible and even makes time before exams to meet with students in Alderman for questions, which is quite helpful. Midterm, final, and 3-5 page paper with a creative component.
