Don't take this class if you want an A: you'll most likely get an A- or B.
Very boring class, and very old and uninspiring teacher.
I didn't learn how to analyze film at all. I (and I suspect most of the class) didn't do the readings as they were very boring. Many people even skip the required 'lab' (film showing).
I wouldn't recommend taking it, though I'm glad I got to see some of the films.
Korte is brilliant. He seems a little cranky, but in terms of instruction, he's a genius. Pretty much all the films you watch are great and the class will give you an amazing introduction to film analysis. There's a bunch of reading in the first half of the semester that's important for the midterm, but 0 reading after the midterm. The only way to get an A is to take really good notes in class and to rewatch the movies before the midterm and final. If you like movies and you want to listen to a professor who knows what they're talking about, take this class.
This class isn't exactly an easy A. It is enjoyable enough if you want to watch a lot of classic movies. The thing is that the TAs are very particular as to what you have to write for your midterm and final. Definitely read the book throughout the semester. Overall I'd say this is a pretty painless way of fulfilling the Fine Art CLAS requirement.
