Korte is very enthusiastic about film and knows what he is talking about. If you are interested in film history or the industry I would recommend this class as a good intro. Also if you take it in the fall, he brings in one of the big name guests from the Virginia Film Festival to talk to the class. It's kind of annoying having a weekly screening you have to be at, but you watch a lot of good classic movies.
Very enjoyable. I hated movies before taking this class, but now I understand so much more about cinema. Korte seems like a boring old man at first, but once you get used to his straight-forward lectures, you learn a lot. Class has 2 midterms and a final, so you dont have a lot of work to be constantly doing.
Awesome film selection. Lectures aren't anything to write home about, but Korte offers some good insight on the usage of different techniques by the directors. Definitely not an easy A, but as long as you rewatch the movies and are careful to note key scenes that use a variety of cinematic techniques to great effect (each essay midterm reqires a couple in-depth scene analyses on two to four films). The textbook is long and VERY thorough but you really do need to read and understand it to do well on the objective midterm.
Class consists of 2 midterms- one based on readings and one based on class thus far- and one final. Know chapter terms for reading-related material and you'll easily scrape a B. You have choices for the essay midterms (based on movies) so if you attend 3/4 classes and use specific examples in your essay, you're good to go. Got an A- and never went to Friday lectures
