I thought this class was going to be fun, but it was not what I expected. Even though the professor is really nice and very knowledgable his lectures were somewhat boring. Your whole grade is based on a multiple choice test, an essay midterm, and an essay final. The final is worth about 55% of your grade. The test comes straight from the book. The midterm and final were difficult for me. If you understood the concepts he went over in class and were able to apply them to the movies then you will be fine. Watching the movies every Wednesday is time consuming though.
This class is very interesting and will no doubt change how you view movies, but don't go in expecting it will be easy like I did. The entire grade is a midterm (45%) and a final (55%). They are essays which are graded quite tough. You really need to synthesize the information and present it how Korte wants or you will not get above a B in the class. Even still, I'm glad I took the class as it's a fantastic opportunity to learn about the art of filmaking and film criticism.
This is such a great class and Professor Korte is amazing! You can tell he is very enthusiastic and passionate about what he does! If you go to class, then you pretty much don't have to do any of the readings. I would recommend skimming them before the tests and memorizing some authors'names so you can add them into essays and sound like you actually put in a lot of work. Great class, and an easy A in my opinion.
Walter Korte is amazing. I look at movies from a new perspective now, and I notice things I never noticed before. I see the cleverness in the way films are made.
The class has two parts: a lecture, and a weekly film screening. Try not to miss any of the film screenings because your grade is partly based on your attendance (you can only miss 1 screening before it affects your grade).
The workload isn't bad at all. Just go to every class and film screening. Don't be intimidated by all the readings because you don't have to read all of them. The only thing you absolutely HAVE to read is the textbook, which is a lot more interesting and helpful. However, it’s good to take a look at the other readings because it helps if you use quotes from the readings in your exams.
The essays aren't bad either. Just go to each lecture, hang on to Walter Korte's every word and take good notes. Everything you learned in class and observed from the films is fodder. Have fun! =)
