Such an amazing professor! The class breakdown is 50% weekly quizzes, 30% one-pager assignments (an assignment that compiles a month worth of topics), and 20% participation (including flipgrids, and in-class assignments). It is very obvious that Jirout wants every student to succeed, and is willing to offer help in any way possible. I would definitely recommend this class.
We had weekly quizzes closed book all semester which were not difficult. Three of them are dropped at the end of the semester. We had weekly discussions in class and on canvas- one discussion was dropped if you missed it. No mid-term or final exam but we had one pager assignments- 3 of them for the entire semester which were fun to make and summarized the units we had studied in class. She did incorporate a ton of research into this class and I felt very informed on how to read research articles and pull out the main findings from research.
This class provided a great overview of child development from the research perspective. Honestly, I wasn't expecting to go through as much research as we did but Prof. Jirout does research herself, so I guess that makes sense. Still, I feel like a good grasp on the material and learned about child development in a new way. The class is based on application assignments, group work, peer reviews, and several projects. No exams! Overall, a great class.
If you want an absolutely brainless class this is it. I have taken other child development classes and the way Professor Jirout teaches makes the subject unenjoyable. It’s an easy class for sure, just not my taste. The final project is a breeze and she is very forgiving! The canvas was a mess all semester and she had different dates and timelines all over. Because of this it was hard to keep up when things were due and she wasn’t always helpful when you asked questions. She never grades anything and because it’s either satisfied/not satisfied you’re kinda going blind for assignments since she takes the entire semester. I like her as a person and respect her research but as a teacher I do not recommend personally.
