CK is a wonderful professor, and this is a great course. Though a requirement for the ASL minor, I would recommend taking this class regardless, especially if you are an ASL, sociology, psychology, or anthropology student. The readings are generally straightforward and enjoyable, and the assignments and tests are very reasonable. He tends to test for general comprehension, not specific knowledge, so as long as you do the readings and participate in class, you will be set. Doing the readings is very important, however, don't worry if you don't understand everything from the readings. Things can and will be clarified in class, and CK understands you are a student, and is happy to explain any concepts to keep everyone on the same level.

Chris is great. As a non-ASL speaking student, it was really neat to get to hear him teach the class, but to also watch the interpreter relay to him what we were saying in ASL. The class is discussion driven, but the readings are fairly interesting and the discussions are lively, so it encouraged me to do the readings every day. The course mixes ASL, linguistics, sociology, psychology, literary criticism, and several other topics and fields. If you don't like one particular topic, you know you'll only stay on it for a maximum of three class periods. Course/discussions are cumulative, but it's really rewarding if you're willing to put in the 2-3 hours of prep work per class.
