Carl is the bomb. He just started teaching this class again in Spring 2019 and it was by far my favorite class. He mostly derives equations in class and then the homework is you using the equations. If you are afraid of matlab then I'd suggest running far from this class. Carl will break the laws of physics to make sure his students understand the material, and don't be afraid to ask for example problems in class, homework help, extensions, or anything. He is a gift to the MAE department. I spent maybe 4-5 hours a week on the weekly problem sets, and 5-6 hours on the midterm and final.
Knospe is a decent lecturer, and if you do the homework you will learn the stuff. the only problem is that his tests are in every way unrelated to the homework. One test problem had 17 equations and 17 unknowns; this is testing our ability to use Matlab, not our understanding of the material. Low ass grades all around, lots of people had to withdraw. STAY ON TOP OF THE HW, go to his office hours he straight up gives you the answers a lot of the time
