Make sure to memorize the textbook and all the studies in it (especially the ones he presents in his lecture slides) for the first two tests. The final I thought I bombed but ended up doing alright, but it is a totally different structure than the first two. Prepare like hell and over study and you will be fine. Also, don't Dutch knockout unless you are gonna get a 100 on the final.
I am obsessed with professor Coppock. After taking micro with Elzinga, I strongly disliked economics; coppock managed to completely change my perspective on economics with his engaging lectures, great personality and his ability to break down difficult topics. Professor Coppock is an amazing teacher who truly loves his job. Although challenging at times, I think this class is very worthwhile and it is incredibly necessary that you take it with Lee Coppock. He is one of the best professors I have had. I will say its super unreasonable that tests are >90% of our overall grade and the final alone is 50% of your overall grade. I got a low B on the final and it dropped my final grade from an A to a B+. Really sucks.
Take macro with Coppock!!! He is such an incredible lecturer and makes the material so interesting. He is funny and organized, so his lectures are fun and very easy to follow. He also wrote the textbook, which is helpful because he knows exactly what kind of material you are getting inside and outside of lecture. Coppock cares a lot about his students, and his exams are written and graded very fairly. It's not necessarily in easy course, but Professor Coppock and his TAs make sure to give you the tools you need to do well. Coppock also gets really great TAs. I loved mine and all my friends in the class really enjoyed their TAs too. Even if you aren't pre-comm or majoring in econ, I would recommend taking Coppock's class because I just really enjoyed going to lecture every week. You learn so much valuable information about how the global economy works and you have a lot of fun while doing it.
I thoroughly enjoyed Prof. Coppock's class. He doesn't lecture so much as he does act; it's as if he's performing his lecture each time you come to class and it having a really fun time doing it. He breaks down topics pretty simply and makes complex problems easy to understand. He does, however, expect you to remember some pretty specific stuff from lectures from time to time. I ended the class with an A due to dutch knockout, would have been an A- without it. This class is definitely worthwhile because it will make you a better informed citizen, particularly when listening to and interpreting the news. Don't rely on dutch knockout and don't focus too much on doing practice problems; if you understand the theory and why things are the way that they are, you will do just fine.
If you’ve taken Elzinga’s Micro course, I definitely recommend Coppock’s class. The layout is pretty much the same: some readings due every week, some TA quizzes, clicker questions, 2 midterms, and a multiple choice final. Make sure you go over both the textbook and the PowerPoints. I also thought this course was a bit easier than Elzinga’s as well. Coppock is also a much more engaging lecturer in my opinion. For an intro course, you definitely get a lot out of it.
I LOVED this course. Much better and easier to learn than Elzinga's in my opinion. I looked forward to attending lectures every week. I got screwed over on the grade scale however. I missed an A by a few points in both the overall scale and the dutch knockout scale. So don't get screwed by being proactive and studying your butt off!!! Keep up with readings, do practice problems, and study all resources that are provided to you & you'll be golden. That is all. Loved this class. Wish I could take it again.
Coppock is a great professor who makes difficult topics clear and makes class fun. My biggest piece of advice to get an A in his class is to read the book chapters, do the practice problems, and understand the concepts WELL before the tests. Also study is slides carefully. Like many people, I often just read through my notes and the book chapters 2-3 days before the tests which wasn't good and definitely stressed me out. If you put in good effort, this class will be very easy.
I'm torn on this class. After taking and enjoying ECON 2010 with Ken Elzinga in the Fall, I was excited for what was described to me as a similar class (albeit with different material) with Coppock. His class is about as interesting as a huge lecture can be, and the material is interesting enough if you like econ, but the tests were just strange. They weren't overly hard or demanding, they just included poor questions and were graded VERY arbitrarily at times, pivoting the exams (or "checkpoints" as Coppock likes to call them) from being a test of your knowledge to a guessing game as to how the TAs choose to grade them.
Just how hard was the final? Was it based on details from the textbook and/or the slides? Is going thoroughly over the textbook necessary for the quizzes and exam, or do his slides have all the information?
