This class was not hard. Definitely do the assigned readings in the textbook and the practice problems because they are extremely helpful.
Expect a couple BS questions on every exam that are designed specifically to trick you. Other than that, this is a very manageable course and Coppock is an exceptional lecturer.

TL;DR: Just take this class with Doyle, you'll save yourself the headache.
Out of 440 points, the point breakdown is: 25 points discussion participation, (up to) 15 points lecture participation, 100 pts midterm 1, 100 pts midterm 2, 200 pts final. Or dutch knockout.
Every review here is saying to take macro with Coppock, and then they follow up by saying how hard the class is. I will admit this: he is probably the best orator and lecturer I've taken a class with in my UVA experience. Even his textbook is a genuinely good read. With that being said, it's absolutely asinine to me to recommend a professor because he can speak well when his exams are incredibly difficult. Both midterms are pretty hard, and the final is straight-up unfair. You'd have to study every page of his textbook, review your TA's discussion slides, and attend and review every lecture to get an A. I may sound childish, but when you're taking 3-5 other classes on top of this, it's not easy. I was very happy with my final grade, but it took more effort than ECON 2020 should require.
This is more specific, but I also had a very legitimate reason to require a make-up exam for one of the midterms. His process is outlined in the syllabus, too, on how to do so. For a guy with tenure, who has college-aged/college-graduated children, and preaches every class about the importance of getting internships/jobs, I was shocked when I had to fight him because I had an in-person interview the day of the exam and interviews are not "valid excuses" to make up exams. Cmon, Coppock. No one's trying to game the system weeks in advance of the midterm. Have some empathy...
(By the way, on the first day of class, he was legitimately bragging about how much he's made from his textbook sales. Then he explains that all are required to buy it, but he gives UVA students a special-edition textbook that is also discounted. What a slap in the face - you're still paying at least $120 for it. The cherry on top: iClicker, his lecture participation app, requires a $15 subscription.)
Getting an A in this class took many ups and downs. I came into the class knowing nothing about macroeconomics, and ended up reading through the chapters rigorously. That said, I got a 78% on the first midterm and a 82% on the second midterm. He bases all of his exams mainly on the lectures, as he tends to reward the frequent lecture-goers through hidden meaning questions. On the final, which I managed to get Dutch knockout with (I studied for 3 1/2 weeks in advance) there were questions that I was stumped on even though I knew all the macroeconomics concepts fully. Be prepared to know specific details for the final exam, such as what % does the USA GDP represent of World GDP and what was the unemployment rate during COVID. This class took a lot of time and effort, and its very rewarding if you put in that effort. Good luck to all who take this, especially pre-commerce students.
Coppock is a great lecturer, makes them interesting. The 2 midterms were quite doable, but the final was much harder. Wouldn't recommend relying on the dutch knocket for his class. Reasonable curve at the end of the course.
If you have to take this course, definitely take it with Coppock. Very engaging lecturer, and makes the material easily digestable. I did well on both the midterms - to get over 5 points above the average on both exams I just read every chapter, did the textbook practice problems, the exam review sheets, and the TA homeworks. The first 2 exams are difficult, but very fair. The final, however, I cannot say the same about. I am not sure what I got because grades aren't out yet, but the questions were VERY specific, im talking like specific statistics during specific time frames. There was also some names you had to remember - it was honestly just completely different than the other exams which was frustrating. To prepare for the final they posted an old one for practice but with no answer key?? Despite the final, overall I think Coppock is the way to go for this one.
Lee takes class seriously and is very engaging! His lectures are interesting, and he engages with students frequently. If you need to take Macro, then you should DEFINITELY take it with Lee. The exams can be tricky and are a mix of short answer, match the following questions, etc., so you definitely have to know your stuff but the textbook and lecture defintely will help you score well. TA sections are not as helpful and only go because of the required weekly quiz. But overall Lee got love for the game and 100% reccomend!
If you take macroeconomics, take it with Coppock. Super engaging lectures (much better than micro imo) and you can tell he's really passionate about the subject. Exams can be tricky, as all intro econ ones are, but fair if you've read the textbook and prepared. He writes the textbook for the class, so it matches up well and test questions are often pulled from it.
Professor Coppock is an excellent lecturer who makes economics both accessible and engaging. His exams are fair, as long as you attend class and keep up with the textbook, you’ll be well prepared. It’s a good mix of challenge and clarity. Final exam is very tricky and easily based on the last unit. I'd only recommend for anyone needing to complete an econ requirement or interested in macroeconomics.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO. Coppock is an enjoyable instructor, who is fun and makes the lecture engaging. However with that said, the lectures are actually useless. They are super surface level and do not really prepare you for the exams. Everything in the course is based upon the textbook, which is dense and not enjoyable to read. Oh and get this, it’s $100 and some of the answer keys are wrong in the textbook. The grade is made up of 2 midterm exams, discussion section points, Iclicker questions, and the final exam. The exams are difficult, however there is a curve at the end of the course. This semester, it was by one whole letter grade.Overall I will say I did learn useful information from this course, however, it is undoubtedly a difficult and I do not recommend taking unless you are required to.
I loved this class and this instructor. I think he puts a lot of effort into making his lectures enjoyable, and you should definitely go because you get some credit for going. This class has dutch knockout. Overall, made up of TA points, mid terms, participation and the final if you don't do dutch knock out. If you do the readings and study, you can get a good grade.
