I enjoyed this class more than ECON 201. I found the topic to be far more interesting, and Professor Coppock is just as good as Professor Elzinga. Whereas ECON 201 focused on economic forces and individual decision-making, ECON 202 focused on the national economy and macroeconomic policy. And though Coppock is not as famous as Elzinga, he was definitely a better lecturer. The course was structured very similarly to ECON 201. Lectures were twice a week, and clickers were required. Discussion was once a week and was not mandatory because my TA points were awarded according to online quizzes. My TA was Pingyu He and I would not recommend her, as she does not speak very good English. I found the midterm and final exams to be easier than Elzinga's, though in my opinion, the answer keys were botched on both exams. There was, of course, the legendary Dutch-knockout on the final exam, which can be very helpful. A fair warning, however- there was essentially zero curve this semester, maybe 1 pt at most. Do NOT rely on the curve in this class. Bottom line: very interesting and fairly easy course. All UVA students- regardless of their interest in economics or business- would do themselves a favor by taking this class, as it is essential for the making of a well-informed and responsible citizen.
This course was by far my favorite of my first year! Coppock is a truly amazing professor. I enjoyed ECON 2020 more than ECON 2010, not only because the material was more relevant to the real world but also because Coppock actually teaches during class. He has notes on the screen and goes through material. I did read his textbook, so his lectures were very similar to the chapters, but he just has a way of making concepts that seem difficult at first really easy to understand! The grade consists of two midterms, clicker points, discussion grade, and a MC final. I found the midterms and final really fair - if you study the lecture notes and truly understand it then you will do fine. I HIGHLY recommend this course to everyone because it clears up any misconceptions you may have about the economy and the government's role in it, specifically fiscal and monetary policy.
I bombed my first test because the answers they look for are exactly how he says them in class/how they are written in the textbook. Reading is so important to do well on the test. I did exponentially better on my second test because I knew what to expect and studied the points that he emphasized in class. Honestly, I loved the class though. I wish I were better at economics so I could major. But Coppock makes the topic so interesting and I never missed his lecture because each one was very worthwhile. Clicker Questions are a part of your grade. Discussions were worthwhile (at least mine was).
Coppock is an excellent professor. He is entertaining, funny, and has an excellent teaching style. He uses power points effectively and the textbook (written by him) coincides with the material. The exams aren't too bad, and the in-class clicker questions are slightly easier than those in Microecon with Elzinga. Also, Anna Gordon is an awesome TA. She really understands the material.
This class is very straight-forward and fun. It's not an over commitment and you just need to keep up with the reading to do well. Coppock tries to keep his lectures interesting and engaging. Not a a lot of work outside of class if you keep up with the current material. Always have the option to dutch knockout at the end of the semester if need be!
Just how hard was the final? Was it based on details from the textbook and/or the slides? Is going thoroughly over the textbook necessary for the quizzes and exam, or do his slides have all the information?
