This class is very straight-forward and fun. It's not an over commitment and you just need to keep up with the reading to do well. Coppock tries to keep his lectures interesting and engaging. Not a a lot of work outside of class if you keep up with the current material. Always have the option to dutch knockout at the end of the semester if need be!
Great Professor, great lecture and book and a very interesting class. Would definitely recommend this class.
One of the best professors that I have had at UVA, great lecturer. Even as a student who has never taken an econ class in her life, Coppock made the class content enjoyable and easy to learn!
Coppock was one of the best professors I have ever had. I would definitely take his class.
Coppock is an excellent professor. He is entertaining, funny, and has an excellent teaching style. He uses power points effectively and the textbook (written by him) coincides with the material. The exams aren't too bad, and the in-class clicker questions are slightly easier than those in Microecon with Elzinga. Also, Anna Gordon is an awesome TA. She really understands the material.
Coppock's lectures are really clear, and he does a great job at clarifying and explaining the concepts. It helps that he wrote the textbook too. I thought his two midterms were very straightforward. Just make sure to know the definitions as well as the rotunda principles verbatim.
I bombed my first test because the answers they look for are exactly how he says them in class/how they are written in the textbook. Reading is so important to do well on the test. I did exponentially better on my second test because I knew what to expect and studied the points that he emphasized in class. Honestly, I loved the class though. I wish I were better at economics so I could major. But Coppock makes the topic so interesting and I never missed his lecture because each one was very worthwhile. Clicker Questions are a part of your grade. Discussions were worthwhile (at least mine was).
He's a great lecturer, but his tests are impossible. He wants such specific things that you can't possibly hope to get some of the questions right. I would recommend taking it with a grad student and stopping in some of his lecture from time to time.
This course was by far my favorite of my first year! Coppock is a truly amazing professor. I enjoyed ECON 2020 more than ECON 2010, not only because the material was more relevant to the real world but also because Coppock actually teaches during class. He has notes on the screen and goes through material. I did read his textbook, so his lectures were very similar to the chapters, but he just has a way of making concepts that seem difficult at first really easy to understand! The grade consists of two midterms, clicker points, discussion grade, and a MC final. I found the midterms and final really fair - if you study the lecture notes and truly understand it then you will do fine. I HIGHLY recommend this course to everyone because it clears up any misconceptions you may have about the economy and the government's role in it, specifically fiscal and monetary policy.
