Professor Doyle is truly there to help you to succeed. I went to his office hours once to ask for clarification on parts of the exam I didn’t do so well on, but he ended up looking over the entire exam, and gave points back (even though I wasn’t arguing for them. He also came to know my name, which is impressive for a professor with 400 students for a class. Tests can be tricky, quizzes are even more tricky (regardless if it’s open note or not). Final exam is hard, but it’s econ what do you expect. Take it with Doyle though, it might be less painful.
For those of you humanities students who are afraid of math and numbers in general, take microeconomics with Doyle. I've never been good at math and have been terrified of taking this class for months, having been forced to do so as a prerequisite for my major program. For me at least, the tests and quizzes were very difficult. Buy the textbook and do all of the readings and practice tests- practice will reward you well in this course. Even though I did poorly on the two major exams (72 and 81 respectively,) I ended up doing well on the final and getting dutch knockout with an A- in the class. Maybe it was just that I studied a shit ton for the final, but I thought the final exam was pretty easy. You HAVE to study though, this is not the type of class where you can just BS your way into getting a good grade. Trust me, if I can do it, you can too. Just put in the work and don't slack off. Doyle's lectures are extremely boring but you should definitely not skip class.
Everyone should had a decent understanding of economics so everyone should take this class. What's great about this class is the Dutch Knockout, so if you study hard for the final and get a grade that exceeds your overall class grade, your final becomes your class grade. If you want to do well in this class I recommend doing the readings and going over a lot of practice problems in your study groups. Also take good notes that could act as your study guide for the final. Doyle is a very funny and compassionate guy that wants all of his students to do well so go to his office hours and ask questions.
Very dry and not personable. I am sure he knows his stuff but it did not really translate in a big lecture. Exams were alright but not the best and there would consistently be mistakes on them, which sometimes were to our benefit but still annoying. Not an awful class if you have to take it as a pre-req but I would not recommend him.
Take ECON 2010 with Doyle. Especially if you are just trying to get rid of a Microeconomics requirement and move on with your life. Doyle is a really sweet guy, and he really cares about his students and makes himself accessible. He tries to relate to students. The class grade is split among quizzes, practice tests, and actually exams. Some of the questions from the exams literally come from the practice tests. Reading the textbook is helpful sometimes, but not always required, really at your own discretion.
I'd definitely recommend taking ECON 2010 with Carter Doyle. He breaks down the info pretty well during lectures, although I would recommend doing the reading (sometimes he leaves out little bits mentioned in the textbook and puts them on the tests/quizzes). There are 2 midterms, 2 quizzes, and a final. If you read the book and do the practice problems he gives before assessments, you'll be fine. Also shout out to my TA, Brandon Warren, he really got into better detail during discussions, and overall was the best TA I've had at UVA.
Doyle's a nice guy and good professor. At first I wasn't really on board - his lectures are basically 1/4 of the info in the textbook, so you're tested on way more than he teaches. And he's kind of that tries hard to be funny/cheesy dad jokes guy. But he def grew on me, especially post Zoom, because his lecture vids were like concise summaries of the textbook chapters and helped clarify some things. He was also helpful and nice in office hrs. Grading is fair and he does dutch knockout (he also curved our class grade up 2 pts). Overall a good class - prob the easiest micro teacher from what I've heard
You will probably have to take ECON 2010 at some point when at UVA and Doyle is definitely the professor to take it with. He's a really nice guy and sometimes gets knocked for the dry lectures and not funny dad jokes, but he is really helpful (especially during office hours). I found the lectures to actually be helpful also as he summarizes the info that you need to know for the class. With that being said, it's a really good idea to keep up with the readings from the textbook as not everything on the tests is covered in the lecture. There isn't homework for the class and the grading is mostly based on the three exams and two quizzes. Doyle also provides a ton of practice questions leading up to all of his tests which are very helpful. Grading is fair for the most part and Doyle does employ the dutch knockout, however it is pretty tough to get an A (although not impossible) with the cut off being a 95. Overall, I'd recommend micro with Doyle as he is the easiest when compared to others.
I took Doyle over the summer because I was afraid of the in person professors (Elzinga). I needed to take econ solely for the requirement, I really didn't care about learning the material effectively. I would overall recommend this class for someone in my position, because the online aspects made it a lot easier to digest. Heads up though: In my opinion, the study guides had nothing to do with the tests. Didn't pertain at all. It is a lot better to focus on the lecture slides. He DOES test on things that you haven't learned in lecture. The saving grace is the Dutch knockout though; it was ALL multiple choice, which was always easier for me than the short answer. Because of the dutch knockout, I got ended with an A- in the course. Otherwise, I probably would've gotten a C. I would definitely take it over the summer with Doyle if you want an easier time!
I had to take this class as a requirement and economics definitely isn't my thing, but the prof is pretty good at his job, everything was explained really well and usually made sense. Quizzes and tests were a little less fair in my opinion, it seemed like sometimes question types we hadn't covered would show up but I slacked off a bunch in this class so maybe thats just it.
