Doyle is a super nice guy and genuinely cares about his students. The lectures can be a tad boring since he pretty much just reads off his power points but they are necessary since he has clicker questions (all participation based). The two midterms aren't that bad, but the final is a little bit tricker. The only thing that upset me about this class was the high cutoffs for grades (95 for an A, 91 for A-) that were not released until after the final. Would recommend if you need micro for your major, but would not recommend for an easy "A" or to fulfill a gen ed requirement.
Doyle is a great guy, really cares about his students and makes himself readily available to help them. While he does read off power points for lecture, I found his explanations to be interesting and offer a different perspective at some points. Exams are not horribly difficult, but pretty hard to get a flat A. Good class overall.
No real work besides the readings, would advise all to show up to class and discussion (it really doesn't take much time, and those points are essential to obtain if one wants an a - don't count on the dutch knockout), and the tests are by and large pretty straightforward. Coming from the e-school i found the class to be a nice break
Loved Doyle! Although lectures can sometimes be a little boring in certain chapters, Doyle always tries to make the material relatable to students. The Dutch Knockout makes the class a little less stressful. Just three tests and several quizzes in discussion. Overall a very manageable work load. The tests are fair and can best be prepared for by doing practice problems from the study guide that I highly recommend purchasing as it will make studying much simpler.
Doyle's class was a laid back exposure to the Principles of Microeconomics. From what I have heard from classmates, the midterms were more fair than Elzinga's. Doyle also has employs the Dutch Knockout, so if you struggle on one of the tests you have a guaranteed opportunity to make up for it. Would recommend this to anyone in the CLAS.
Absolutely amazing man and great teacher. Really wants to get to know you and cares about each person. He wants you to come and ask questions and nothing is too dumb for him. He answers your questions really nicely and well. Not too difficult of a class and the workload is very manageable. I highly recommend Professor Doyle, no matter the class he teaches.
Professor Doyle was one of the least intriguing professors that I have taken a class with at UVA. His lectures were generally quite dull, and often included long rambling tangents. I felt that his exams were often poorly written and ambiguous. I would highly recommend taking this class with another professor if you would like to earn a good grade and gain a deeper level of understanding of the class material.
Do yourself a favor and take Micro with Doyle. I took Micro with Elzinga and failed. With Doyle I got a B+. He breaks the material up into manageable pieces, at least for the summer he did. He give you practice exams which help you prepare for the real exams, quizzes, etc. As long as you read the textbook, take your own notes, pay attention in lecture and take good notes, and use the study guide there is no reason you should not be able to get a B+.
I personally didn't enjoy this class in particular. I was sick for a couple of important lectures, and because of this I didn't do particularly well in the following midterm exam. When I e-mailed Professor Doyle about it a couple of weeks before the final exam in order to take advantage of the Dutch Knockout, he never answered. The one redeeming aspect of this course for me was that my TA, Alex Watkins was really helpful and managed to help me learn a lot of the material I missed and helped me pass the course. Also, exams were often poorly written as they were confusing and the practice tests and quizzes were too easy and therefore insufficient in preparing me for the midterms or final.
