This class was super cool, but I literally never went to lecture. I did go to my discussion which was super helpful in understanding all the comics, but it depends on who your TA is (Dana Moyer was good!). Professor Crawley is super interesting and fun but often goes on tangents. I didn't read most of the comics and never paid for the materials. I would find a free version or use a free preview to do assignments and participate in discussion. I took this for an easy A and it was. It filled one of my requirements with an easy A and relatively easy work. If I remember correctly, there are basically no assignments or exams, except for a final paper that is very flexible.
#tCFspring22 #tCFspring2022 I really enjoyed this class. I don't know if he intends on doing the same readings in the future but our class was focused completely on comic books, which I found really interesting and much easier to read than long essays or textbooks. If you read them in full they still take time but it isn't bad because you're basically just reading stories. Crawley's lectures are thought-provoking and the work isn't crazy demanding. Discussion is a lot of fun too. Definitely an easy GPA boost that is really enjoyable and valuable to understand, highly recommend.
(Notice: COVID Semester!) Overall, this course was extremely easy! This semester had a weekly lecture, corresponding readings, and a discussion component over the weekly readings. I ended with an A in the course and honestly did the bare minimum required. My assumption is that this course does not resemble the academic quality of the AAS department (at least would hope so), as it felt that the course was lazily put together. Granted, it was an easy A and both Prof. Crawley and my TA were extremely kind and flexible, making this class a breeze, but I do believe that the department could have added a little more substance to the course. The content was predictable and was not very in depth. The readings offered great perspective, but I would have loved greater diversity of thought within the readings and lectures. Easy A, light workload, and it was 4 credits, so i would highly endorse.
Extremely easy class if you're looking for something to boost your GPA. Really interesting class that particularly goes through readings that are accessible/ given by the Professor. Grades in this class are based on projects that you work on/ proposals you have to make for those projects. My TA Jason Evans made discussion very interesting and some times we would ramble about things that weren't related to the class, but nevertheless he made discussion amazing. Professor Crawley taught this course amazingly and made sure we needed everything (especially during the pandemic). I recommend this class for anyone who is looking for an easy A in a class that doesn't require all your efforts.
I loved this course! Prof. Crawley had to be the most understanding professor I've ever had at UVA. If you simply do the work, you will get an A. The readings typically aren't too long and you can get away with skipping/skimming if necessary (although they're usually pretty interesting, so I highly recommend doing them). There's a few quizzes and a couple papers/projects, but the instructor and the TAs let you know exactly what they're looking for so it's pretty easy to do well on them. I always looked forward to going to lecture/discussion and the material is very relevant; taking this course made me want to minor in AAS.
This class was an overall really enjoyable class! It really celebrated blackness and the culture of blackness which was really cool. Prof. Crawley was super funny and interesting, but honestly the lectures could drag on and get really confusing. My discussion section was so fun and helpful, and allowed a lot of reflection on the topics the class covered rather than dwelling on the materials. This class is one that you do not have to do all of the readings for or attend all of the class meetings to do really well (just attend your discussion section).
I absolutely enjoyed this class! The teacher is fun & we got to talk about a lot of interesting and applicable social topics. Sometimes the lectures are a little all over the place, but the topics aren't difficult to grasp. The discussions were very engaging and the class had a real sense of community. You can do as much or as little of the readings as you want, as long as you pay attention during lectures you can easily get an A.
This course was pretty cool. We got to talk about interesting concepts and topics that are applicable and that challenge your thinking about some things. I really enjoyed the discussion section for this class in particular because everyone really engaged and it felt like a little community. Professor Crawley was a very nice and understanding professor, especially when everyone had to do remote learning. I will say sometimes it is hard to know what the points are because the lectures can be very all over the place. But overall this class is cool, applicable to life, and an easy class.
