Really fun professor- she makes learning the language fun even though the course does have some challenging concepts. What I really liked was that she was really active with emails and sent an email at the start of the week with an outline of the assignments due that week, which made it easier to remember what was due when. Totally recommend taking 1060 with her.
My favorite professor and class I have ever had! She brings an amazing energy into the classroom and is really helpful when you do not understand a concept. She also makes herself easily available if you are not comfortable asking questions in class and encourages you to come talk to her outside of the classroom. The workload is easily manageable but still makes you learn a lot while having fun.
Sarah Young has been such a blessing in my life! She comes to class with enthusiasm, care and efficiency without fail. She amazes me. She knows the material like the back of her hand but also knows how to teach it. She is willing to work one-on-one with students, has created the tutoring program and listens to feedback! When I was injured in a bike accident, she supported me, prayed for me, helped me with everything I needed and even got me a gift. Take Span 1060 with Professor Young. You won't regret it.
Professor Young is the most amazing professor and person! She has so much energy and makes the class fun. The class goes really fast, so the workload is a decent amount. But if you stay caught up and put in the work, your experience will be great! I went to office hours and tutoring almost every week, and Professor Young will do anything in her hands to help her students be as successful as possible. If you have to take Spanish 1060 for your language requirement, I definitely recommend Sara Young! I am so happy to have had her and the student-to-teacher bond we made! I would ALWAYS read the pages from the textbook that were assigned, so that I could participate effectively the next day in class. I did not read the assigned readings one time, and I was very confused the next day. Participation is a big part of the class, and Professor Young LOVES it when you participate.
Profesora Sara Young is hands down the best professor to take Span 1060 with! She is so kind and goes out of her was to help you. The work is not that difficult but there is a lot and if I was ever behind or did a homework incorrectly, she would tell me before the deadline. She explains material very clearly and constantly inquires if anyone has questions. She even created a free tutoring program for students that meets every week! She does everything and beyond to help her students succeed. If you are taking SPAN 1060, TAKE IT WITH SARA YOUNG! The Spanish Department dictates the grading which is 10% for connect hw, 10% for the final, 4 exams that are 30%, quizzes that are 10%, 10% final, oral exam for 10%, 2 research projects for 10%, and Eportfolio for 10%.
This course takes a lot of time (which is why it is 4 credits!). You have nightly homework on an online platform which is almost like a workbook and takes about an hour every night as well as different writing or speaking activities which must be published onto your ePortfolio. There is one mandatory textbook and another grammar book which I didn't even open until studying for the final as well as a dictionary that you must being to class for participation points (I usually only brought the textbook and was fine). This course moves quickly, so class attendence is a necessity (the attendence policy is also VERY strict, so make sure to get a time that you will actually be able to attend). I took this course with Prof. Young and loved it. She has a ton of energy, and has been teaching this course for eight years, so she has the experiece and knowledge of how to get students to understand the material. I had this class when all classes were moved online and her flexibility with the schedule was truly amazing. She is a BIG emailer, which honestly helps with the amount of assignments due nightly-- you can't really forget them because she will email you a reminder. Prof Young wants you to suceed in this class, so ask her for help because she truly wants all her students to do well. She loves people who bring some energy into class with them and participate (and again, participation is a large portion of your grade), so if you are a talker in classes Prof. Young is definitely who you should take this class with.
In this course Professor Young quickly vaulted into being one of the best teachers I have ever had and by far my favorite foreign language professor. The very beginning of the semester can be a bit overwhelming simply because of the fast-pace nature of the class but trust me once you figure out how to stay on top of work and get assignments done efficiently the course is extremely manageable and becomes very enjoyable. I found this to be true even as I took 17 credits. Professor Young keeps the time spent in class focused and productive and is a very fair and straightforward grader. On that note, she grades faster than any professor I have ever had and is very comprehensive in what areas to improve on. She was always willing to help any individual outside of class and provides every resource you need for success. This course may require more involvement than any "easy A" class but that is just because the only way to learn a language is through repetition. As someone who struggles with foreign language and had virtually no Spanish experience coming in, I still got an A-. The one downside is that to get an A you must get a 96 or above in the course, but that isn't Professor Young's policy that is Spanish Dept. wide so any SPAN class you take hits you with that. I am sure that other professors are great but if you can definitely take this with Professor Young. My only pieces of advice are don't be lazy (stay on top of the work) and if you are at all struggling with a concept just meet with her or go to the tutoring she provides. In all, highly recommend!!!
Professor Young is one of the most energetic professors I've ever had at UVA. I first walked into her class having had 0 Spanish experience whatsoever and I was nervous about the class. However, Professor Young's attitude, along with the flipped classroom way of teaching Spanish helped me grasp the language so well, and I came out at the end of the semester being confident in my ability to speak some Spanish. She was constantly motivating as a professor, and made herself available to her students as much as possible, whether it was office hours or her quick responses to emails. I would recommend her as a Spanish professor to anyone who is taking the class.
Professor Sara Young is one of the most energetic and engaging professors I've had at UVA! In the beginning, I was kind of upset I had to take Spanish again because I didn't place out on the foreign language exam, but my experience with this class, my classmates, and Professor Young couldn't have been any better! Professor Young always explains everything concisely and thoroughly and she will always answer everyone's questions. When I or other students make mistakes in her class, she will correct us in a very kind way so we can learn from our mistakes. I'm never afraid to raise my hand in her class because I'm not afraid to make mistakes in her class. I know with some of my other classes, I'll won't want to raise my hand unless I know I have the correct answer. The class can be a lot of work, but the work is never too difficult. As long as you keep up with work and review the vocabulary over time and take notes on the grammar tenses, you will succeed in this class. Overall, this is a great course and if you can, try to get Professor Sara Young!
