This course was by far the most interesting and applicable class I've taken at UVA. If you want to go into private equity or investment banking, this class will cover the things you will actually do in these industries. Carola is also awesome and funny but also teaches well. You basically build a bunch of LBO models in excel and learn how they work. The class is based on actual LBO cases and balances the technical and qualitative aspects of each deal. All the work you do in the class is with your group (no exams, just take home cases) so get a good group. Cannot recommend this class more.
This class was probably my favorite class I have taken in the comm school thus far. Professor Schenone is absolutely fantastic and very accommodating. All of the cases are very interesting and the workload is manageable. Make sure you have a solid group though because all grades are based on group case studies, and you have the same group for the entire semester. I came out of the class with a much better understanding of valuation and I gained technical/modelling skills that I can take into my job. Would absolutely recommend this course as a finance capstone; it was genuinely one of the most interesting and fun classes I have ever taken.
Not a bad class. This finance capstone mainly was case work. The midterm and the final were cases which was amazing. Every week you are assigned a case divided into the qualitative and quantitative question. You definitely need to pay attention when reading the cases, and think out of the box when answering her case questions.
The drawback of the case heavy class was that there were no other grades and no rubrics. You would definitely need to go to her office hours to get a better understanding.
Carola is an interesting professor. She understands the struggles of student life. She started having groups prepare presentations on the cases. One annoying thing was she made us buy the course pack and then assigned a midterm and a final case that needed to be purchased.
Some time in the class, she will have a guest speaker come in to share a failed LBO exit which was cool.
