Cheema is a very sweet man. He was an engineering major and so this class is extremely structured and organized, which I appreciate. Grades are 2 exams (that are in my opinion hard and handwritten) and 2 fairly large group projects (pick a good group you guys), and participation. There's readings for every class and then it's really important to take good notes in class (exams are open note). It is honestly a lot of work but the content of the class is superrrr interesting for anyone with an interest in marketing. I'd probably suggest taking with Cheema if I were you. He is a hard grader, and very particular but I feel like its HIS class ya know
I took this course as an elective for my Marketing concentration, and I'm glad I picked it! The content of the course was really interesting, the readings were relevant but brief, and the assignments were also fun ways to apply what we learned in class. The exams were fair, as they are open-note and Professor Cheema provides an in-class review session and additional office hours. However, they are long - you have to make sure you know the material before-hand to perform well, since you probably won't have time to look too much through your notes except to check some facts or examples. The course is graded on a curve, so you're essentially competing with your peers (top ~% get As, next ~% get A-s, etc.). Making sure to perform well on your individual assignments (retail assignment and exams) and participating regularly in class will ensure you do well!
I also adored Professor Cheema! I normally do not gush about professors, but Professor Cheema has got to be one of my favorite professors at the University. Not only is he super approachable and accommodating, he is INCREDIBLY knowledgable! Professor Cheema structures the class as a discussion based on his lectures, and gives ample opportunities to students to provide their insights or pose questions about the material. Cheema has the habit of rephrasing each student's question to make sure he is understanding them correctly, then gives really thought-out answers supported by studies or statistics he seems to have written on the back of his hand. Highly recommend taking this course!
One of the best classes I've taken at UVA. Cheema is incredibly organized, transparent and approachable, and I honestly learned so much just from how he runs the class and lectures so smoothly. His exams are open note and are really pretty easy if you write down what he says in class that isn't on the slides, go through his handouts and skim over the important readings. The individual and group reports are both really interesting to write -- I had heard Cheema was a tough grader but if you stick to writing them the way he suggests you'll probably be fine. Overall, this class was incredibly useful and enjoyable for marketing concentrators and gave me a lot to talk about in interviews, as well as just think about in daily life because its so applicable. Don't miss out!
Almost no daily work which is amazing. Cheema is really laid back and nice. The course is important for anyone who is interested in Marketing and could be really really helpful to people interested in consulting in the consumer goods sector. Luckily he really liked my project and paper but I know some people struggled with his grading. I would overall recommend it and Cheema is a just a cool helpful guy. #tcf2016
Cheema is awesome. He is very down to earth and loves to talk about current examples for each concept. Reading is usually 1 or 2 articles, with one 2 page paper, 1 test, and a group project. The test isn't hard, but tough to finish in the time given. Cheema is more than happy to answer any questions and give advice, which is awesome. Either way, you will get a lot of good concepts and understand why they are relevant to life.
Amar Cheema is THE man. Absolute best professor I've had at the Comm School. And this class is equally awesome. All we do is discuss current, relevant issues that you can participate in discussion with as long as you have a pulse. The format of the class is simply do the reading before each class, which is extremely reasonable (less than an hour always). Class entails going through powerpoint slides, with a great deal of discussion. PARTICIPATE! There is one individual assignment, which is actually really cool (you basically assess the retail strategy of the store of your choice). Then there is a group project, which is also really interesting (you pick a struggling brand and assess its position, then re-position it). This group project also serves as the course's final, including a presentation at the very end.
BOTTOMLINE: Of all the classes I've taken in my UVA career, I would recommend this class over all other others. Best experience of my academic career.
Professor Cheema is the best. He is so enthusiastic about the subject and really wants students to enjoy the class as well. Reading only consists of reading a few articles he posts on blackboard for each class and they are all really informative and interesting to read anyways. I always learn about what cool technology or market trend is going on from the readings. He is a great down to earth guy but you learn a lot in his class too. Definitely take him, you will not regret it!
