Prof. McDermott is a great professor as she is very passionate about both teaching and accounting. My only criticism of Prof. McDermott is that she can come off as condescending when answering questions but other than that she is amazing. Given that, this course is still tough and I would not suggest taking the class unless you want to pursue a degree in accounting or finance. Depending on how well you understand the content, the readings are worth doing to solidify concepts. There are weekly "cases" and quizzes that make up a small part of your grade but the main chunk is two midterms and a cumulative final. The exams are much harder than anything done in class and the exams can cover absolutely everything. Ultimately, Intermediate Accounting I is a tough class and I would only recommend if you are pursuing a career in accounting or finance. #tCFF23
Awesome professor. All the 3110 professors are pretty good, but she's probably the best one so definitely take her class if you can. She explains concepts really well and is super helpful and patient when you ask questions in class or outside of class. She also is really knowledgeable about accounting careers, and is more than happy to talk about accounting careers/advice. I believe shes also the CPA exam advisor for McIntire, so super knowledgeable about that as well. The homework and exams are the same across all sections, and they're pretty straightforward. The homework is basically all completion grades, and they give practice exams before each exam that is the exact format of the exam. #tCFF23
Professor McDermott is an amazing professor. She really made a topic like Intermediate Accounting be as fun as it can get, and is very flexible because she understands how difficult the ICE workload is. She'll answer any question you ask, and really encourages participation in class. Her practice exams really prepare you well for each exam, and will walk you through any question if you are confused. Would highly recommend Professor McDermott for Intermediate Accountin. #tCFfall22
I really enjoyed this class because of Prof. McDermott. The content is obviously not thrilling, as it is accounting, but she makes it very understandable. She offers follow-along notes packets for each topic which makes studying much clearer and simpler. There are mini-Connect quizzes due each week which are easy if you pay attention in lecture and occasional "cases" which she grades on completion. She is super nice in office hours and is always available to help with tricky concepts. The 2 midterms were definitely fair and she gives practice exams to study from. That being said, the final was very hard with no practice exams for that as well. All in all, she does curve the final grades at the end and all in all, she was one of my favorite professors this semester! Highly recommend taking 3110 with her!! (I ended up with a B+ despite being below average on the 2nd midterm and not the best final exam grade either) #tCF2020
McDermott is a super friendly professor who really wants her students to succeed. She answers as many questions as you ask, usually ends class a little early, and is super helpful in office hours to review concepts. There were a lot of optional practice problems available and she provides notes outlines that you just have to fill in during class, so I didn't find it too hard to keep up with the content. I never read the textbook but worked through a lot of past questions which made the tests very manageable. Very little homework/cases and you can work with someone else on it and it's graded for effort so a great class to take with ICE. McDermott is also a very positive person who understands that college is stressful and tries to move things around schedule wise to not conflict with other big ICE projects.
McDermott is a really good professor that very obviously knows her stuff and cares about her students. The class itself is not nearly as boring or confusing as COMM 2010 or 2020 in my opinion, but it is an accounting class, after all - there will be dull spots. You don't really need the textbook, just keep up with the notes and go to office hours a couple times. She's very good at explaining concepts one-on-one if you had any trouble in class.
