Professor Backof is very enthusiastic and approachable, but the class can be confusing because her notes and style of teaching are not very streamlined. This is just the nature of accounting, though. The textbook is essentially useless - we are told even not to read it. As long as you pay attention in class and take your time with the weekly online homework, you should do well.
Not sure if this is obvious to everyone, but don't take accounting unless you have to. It's boring and not exactly easy. That being said, if you have to take it, try to take it with Professor Backof. She's really enthusiastic and is truly dedicated to making sure students understand the material. Her tests mimic the class notes so use those for exam prep, and don't underestimate the complexity of the material.
This class is extremely difficult. Backof certainly is very approachable to answer questions. I think she's a pretty good lecturer, but with material as challenging as this course, that can only go so far. This class required a lot of outside studying. Be absolutely certain that you are intending to apply to the Comm school or are completing the Engineering business minor before enrolling in this course.
The material is somewhat difficult and the class moves through it quickly. However, Mrs. Backof was a terrific lecturer and is ABSOLUTELY the professor to take it with. Seriously, wait a semester if you have to she really is worth it (and she is very attractive... an added bonus). Homeworks are simple because you only need 80% thus you can skip all the hard problems. If you come from an math/engineering background this course is easy compared to what you're doing in those classes. Put in the time and work and you'll be fine.
Backof is the nicest person ever. She is definitely the professor that you want for this class. She is a very good lecturer, even though the subject is dull. That being said, this is a difficult class. Of course, don't take it unless you have to.
If you do have to, make sure you go over the notes after every class and make sure you understand (wish I had done this earlier). If you need help, go to Backof's office hours; GAs were a waste of time. Don't be fooled by the hw; it's easy. Tests are way harder and the only way to prepare is through notes and practice exams.
Finally. Don't buy the textbook because you need the access code and it's cheaper to buy them together from the bookstore.
I was apprehensive about having Backof since she is the newer of the two COMM2010 professors but I was glad to have taken this class with her in the end. She's a really nice, adorable lady and explained concepts pretty well in class and before/after class when I had questions. Never went to her office hours or GA office hours so can't attest to those. The material is tricky but Backof did a decent job of teaching it. There is online homework (not too bad, only need 80% to get full credit so pretty much free points), 2 midterms (30 questions), and a final (think it was 50 questions). Exams are hard; the average on the first test was a C- and she was nottttt happy because she scales the grade cutlines to a B- at the end.
It's really important for you to stay awake in class. RRH120 was always really warm so for the first few months, I dosed off a lot. However, everything she says is information you should know for the exam - be awake and write it down. The book is useless - skim it once for the bolded words and don't dwell on it too much. Study the homework and the problems in the notes for the test. I think Accounting is something you either get or you don't. Take it for pre-comm and good luck!
Professor Backoff is one of the nicest professors I've had at the semester! She is very knowledgeable about accounting and was able to make a topic as boring as accounting easy to understand and interesting to listen to. However, this is not an easy class. They don't call it the weed out class for Pre-comm people for nothing.
However, Professor Backoff is very approachable and I often went to her office hours to ask her about topics we covered in class and she was always happy to help in any way possible. After going to her office hours, my grades improved dramatically and I ended up doing very well in the class. My greatest piece of advice is pay attention during lecture. Everything on her note sheet is fair game for her exams, which are hard. Also RRH120 is a fairly warm room with very comfortable chairs and I often found myself dozing off. In all honesty, this class is like a math class. The more you understand the material and practice it, the better you will be on the exams. Good luck!!
