This class is probably best for AMST majors, but that being said I absolutely loved it, and can't recommend Professor Brickhouse enough. She is so nice, really cares about her students, and chose really interesting readings for discussion. The grade comes mostly from a 10-12 page paper (you have to turn in a 5 page draft as the midterm paper, so it's really not that bad), leading discussion twice, and the final, which was take home-open note. Small seminars can be intimidating but Prof Brickhouse made it really welcoming. If you have to take 3001, take it with her!

Professor Brickhouse is a terrific person and is more concerned with whether her students enjoy and engage in discussions than any other professor I've studied with. She is incredibly flexible and cancelled the final exam because she "only gives a final if it seems like students haven't been doing the readings."

The new syllabus structure has you read a different author's work for each class and then discuss during the class period. The author's aren't linked by anything other than being generalized American Studies and working at UVa, and as a result this course is more about practicing close reading, analyzing, and debating than it is learning any subject material.

We had two shorter essays over the course of the semester, every student has to lead the class discussion once, and there's a 10 page final paper as well as (possibly) a final exam.

Not a huge fan of the course design/syllabus, but Professor Brickhouse is awesome. She's very approachable, a sweet lady, and always willing to help you out. She cancelled the final exam and extended both our papers back a week "for those that needed extra time". An easy grader as well.
