This class takes up a lot of time because of the 'flipped classroom' element, and it almost made coming to lecture useless. If you put the time in with watching all of the lecture videos and doing the homework/practice sets, you should be okay but it is definitely time consuming. The exams are harder than the practice problems, but the way he weights the course evens it all out in the end. The GTAs in lab will basically be unable to answer your questions clearly, and I've heard his office hours aren't that helpful but I've never been. Overall, it's definitely doable as long as you're willing to put in the effort. Also, don't buy the book - you don't ever use it.
I really didn't think this class is as bad as everyone made it out to be in terms of difficulty. Woo isn't the best professor, but he also drops your 4 lowest pre-quizzes (which you get at least an 80% on just for doing them), he drops your lowest 2 homework grades, and your 4 lowest lab grades (which are all pretty easy). The most tedious part was definitely the pre-quizzes and labs. The exams are a lot tougher than the practice exams, but they also aren't a huge portion of the grade (10% for each midterm, 20% for the final). You also don't need to buy the textbook. I got it just in case and haven't opened it once this semester. If you stay on top of the work and try to understand the concepts, this class really isn't too difficult.
Seriously do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. I loved stat in high school and this class made me despise the subject. The class is 4 credits so you can naturally expect more work, but the level of work that this class demands is not worth it. First off, it's a flipped class. Which is a horrible idea. There are 2-3 videos due every Monday and Wednesday, and they range in length. Regardless of how long the videos say they're going to be, expect to spend 1-2 hours watching and pausing to write notes. He speaks WAY too fast and his handwriting is legible about half the time. For classes, you do lecture activities and participation online. Honestly found these so hard to pay attention to and didn't find value in them. Homework sets are due every Sunday and are generally harder than anything you've gone over in lecture videos or lecture activities. Exams are also hard. The only good thing about this class is that your grade consists of so many components so not doing well on one of the midterms/final isn't going to ruin your grade
I would not recommend this class unless you have to take it. Prof Woo is nice, but the flipped classroom is the worst. It's a lot of work and the actual class time pretty much useless. The labs are an absolute waste of time and do not help you understand the material. The material itself was not ridiculously hard, and if you've taken stat before probably not that bad, and thankfully the exams are not worth too much because they are quite tricky. Also each exam question is worth half a letter grade and they are multiple choice and the wrong answers only differ very slightly from the right ones. Overall it is not impossible to do well in the class by any means but you will not enjoy the class at all and its a ridiculous amount of work. rip all the pre-comm kids who have to take it regardless
While the textbook really wasn't necessary in the course, there was one concept that was on both a HW set and on the final that he references we should know in a video and in class. Definitely get the book if you're shooting for the A if not then its not necessary. If you give yourself the proper time to complete all the videos and work at home then the course is a breeze. Exams were tricky, but you will do fairly well if you just put the time in regularly throughout the semester. Lab was dumb, and Woo is hilarious. Would recommend this class IF YOU ARE DILIGENT.
Woo is a nice guy and perhaps the best option for this class, but quite frankly it's just not a great class. You have to watch videos before each class, which are not terrible, but lectures are often painfully boring, and no one would go if 10% of the grade wasn't dependent on answering questions online during lecture. Over 50% of the grade is composed of homework type assignments and lab, which are all pretty easy, so it is not terribly a hard class. However the exams are really tricky and often test your ability to recall very specific details from his videos and from lecture. Using Excel also over-complicates everything. I feel like everything I learned in this class could have been learned on my own. If you do not have to take this class for your major, you would be better off taking a different, more useful stat-based course (like a data science course).
Class is easy except the exams. Exams are all multiple choice, and out of the 25 questions, he always makes 3-4 really specific conceptual things with very similar answer choices. I think thats pretty lazy tbh; he has an army of TA's, he could easily make and grade short answer tests without gotcha questions. But if you show up to everything and do the pre-meeting quizzes and HW sets, thats 50% of your grade right there, so you'll be fine
Professor Woo is clearly very knowledgeable and cares about the class and his students. Although I normally do not like "flipped" classes and feel they are a lazier style of teaching, I felt quite the opposite for this class. He has evidently put a lot of time and effort into the class, and makes it all very organized. He is understanding and an impressive guy, reminds you of what needs to be done, and funny as well. As he says at the beginning of the class, you do get into the routine pretty quickly. He tries to make the class as entertaining as possible, with interesting real world examples. Very approachable as well, especially given the size of the lecture. Would recommend using a Ti-84 during the exams, it's a lot quicker. Just check them over a bunch and you should do fine. Even with okay exam grades, he breaks up the class into many different parts which is great.
This class is not an easy A by any means but if you put in the work you will do just fine. The video lectures are something that people either love or hate; personally, I had no issues with them and found them to be really helpful for learning the material initially and using as study tools for the midterms and finals. There is quite a bit of work for the class but not too overbearing in my opinion. I think Professor Woo does a great job explaining the concepts and provides the resources necessary to get ready for exams. I would recommend this class to others but I do realize it might not be for everyone.
This was the absolute worst class I have taken. Not only is Professor Woo a terrible teacher, but he makes his exams unbelievably hard and does not prepare students well for them. He is rude in his emails and is unapproachable outside of class. This class had the potential to be a good learning experience, but was instead unnecessarily hard and a big stressor. I would not recommend this class to anyone, and if it's a requirement...well good luck, I hated it.
