Jeff Woo is a great guy and has a ton of opportunities for you to talk to him thru office hours, etc. The majority of your grade is from easy group assignments and open note quizzes so if you keep those in the A range and do okay on the exams (2 10% midterms and 1 20% final), you should be able to pull out an OK grade. I did not take statistics in high school so I was lost...but I was able to cram right before my exams. Also, don't be like me and take this for fun...I am neither doing Econ or Comm school and thought this would be a 'useful' class. Lol, jokes, don't do it.
If you have to take STAT 2120, I would recommend taking it with Professor Jeff Woo. There are so many opportunities to get points towards your grade that if you work hard you can definitely get an A- . I will say that this class is a lot of work. There is a huge group statistical study that is 20% of your grade, lab quizzes, reading quizzes, homework, two midterms, and a final. That being said, almost everyone gets a high A on the stat study, and the reading quizzes and homework are very reasonable if you make an effort to do your best on them. The lab assignments can get tedious but the lab quiz questions come straight from your lab answers. The midterms are tough as they are usually only 20 questions, but because there are a lot of buffer grades, your final grade ends up balancing out. I didn't do great on the final, but still ended up with an A because of the other grades in the class. Also, Professor Woo is very reasonable. At the end of the semester he lowered the threshold for an A to a 92 instead of a 93 because 90% of the class filled out the end-of-the-year survey. I recommend taking STAT 2120 with Woo before they move him to another course!
Jeff Woo is the MAN. I tried to take this class 2 semesters ago with Martinet and couldn't get through a week before dropping. Woo's lectures and powerpoints are just about all you need to succeed in this class. DO NOT GET THE BOOK. I opened it once and got an A, and I have never taken a statistics class before this, nor am I a math oriented person. You don't even have to take full notes during lecture (the slides are posted to collab), just write down the worked examples cause they are really helpful. Like many have said there's a lot of busy work, but there are so many opportunities for buffer points and if you understand the material the tests are completely fair and not too difficult. The stat study project takes time but just about everyone gets a 97 or above. If you need to take a statistics class and you aren't a biology major I 100% recommend Woo.
It was pretty easy for a 4 credit class, but beware of the unintelligible GAs and the implicit downward curve. Woo unfairly made his second exam insanely difficult because he felt like people did too well on the first exam, screwing over anyone who thought they would be of similar difficulty. However, he is a pretty cool guy and the labs are good for making friends.
I can understand 99% perfectly of foreign students but my TA just didn't make the mark. He didn't attempt to communicate with the students and just pointed to the undergrad assistants when asked a question in English. My friends said he was quite helpful when they asked questions in Mandarin, so if you speak Mandarin that's a plus. The lab assistants were cool, but obviously that varies.
It's a great class! Woo is a great professor and the content isn't too difficult. The only complaints I have about the class are that he makes the practice exams way easier than the actual exam so for the first midterm you'll be caught way off guard, and the TAs in the lab sections are not helpful at all. Generally, they have no idea what they're doing and they just read their answer key to you and that isn't helpful at all. The way Woo does his grading scale makes it pretty easy to get an A because homework is 25% of the grade and almost everyone gets 100% on that section. I would highly recommend this class.
This course has a lot of weekly assignments. (Homework Set, WebWork, Pre-Meeting Videos and Quizzes) The material isn't too difficult however some problems do take longer than others to figure out. I would only recommend taking this course if you have to. You can easily get a B+ and possibly an A if you don't bomb the exams. (Exam averages were usually around a 73%) Oh and the labs are a waste of time but easy to do.
Professor Woo is a great professor who shows that he is interested in the material he is teaching and in helping his students. This class does, however, have a lot of homework due on Fridays and Sundays including the lecture videos that you will need to take notes of before each class. The midterms and final are definitely harder than the practice ones he will give you so be aware of that as well. The good news is that he made it so that the homework you do weighs higher than both the final and the two midterms so take the homework sets seriously since it can save your grade if you don't do well on the midterms or final exam.
This class is honestly just a pain. Assignments are constantly due and they are not helpful in understanding the material. The exams are unnecessarily difficult and the practice exams he puts up online are easier than the actual test. This class just consumes so much time without helping a whole lot (you are just learning how to do things by hand that Excel and your calculator can do for you). Would not recommend at all.
