This class required a LOT of time and work. The GOOD thing is that Kingston is really fair and nice and will give you a study guide for the final and midterm. DO A GOOD JOB ON THE STUDY GUIDE, even if it takes you 12-14 hours (NOT EXAGERATING). There is a LOT of material in an INTRO class and Kingston required that you know that material. However, he is fair and if you do the work (like go to class AND discussions), then you should be fine.
Claire was AWESOME. She was really sweet and a great lecturer. She made the lectures from class more interesting AND make more sense. She was also pretty fair on the grading, so if you can do it, get Claire as your TA.
This class covered a broad range of topics and is fairly easy since Kingston gives a review sheet for the midterms. There are projects and papers but they are fairly easy though somewhat tedious. The lectures are not particularly interesting but Kingston is a great guy who really wants to get his point across. Claire was a good TA who graded fairly and worked with the students, but discussion also seemed to be boring like the lectures.
I LOVED this course. It was very straightforward and the topics were interesting. The "Easy Guide to an A on the Midterm/Final" made studying for the exams much easier. As long as you focus on what he tells you on the study guide you will easily get A's, if not perfect scores on the exams. Easy course if you put in the time to read. Ended up with an A+ in the course.
If you're looking for a GPA booster, I would not recommend this class. If you're interested in Sociology, I would recommend this class. There is quite a bit of reading for an intro level course, but they are manageable. Two papers, a midterm, two projects and a final, with participation counting as 20% of your grade. Probably going to finish with a B+ or A- in the course. Candace is a hard grader, but great a discussion.
Kington is an extremely boring lecturer and while this subject may sound interesting, it is so broad and abstract that I did not like it. I will likely get either an A- or an A in this course (final is in less than 3 hours and im procrastinating by doing this review) which is good, but the course is challenging. You really will be either lucky with your TA or unlucky because they give out wildly different grades it seems for similar work and everything is pretty subjective. On the first test i lost 6 points on the take home essay just because I didn't explicitly say one key word despite the concept being there, which shows just how random grading can be. Overall not a particularly bad class just if you don't need to take it i would stay clear
Overall, would not recommend. Course material was very easy. The bad part was that your grade in large part depended on whatever the TA wanted. Braswell was not an easy grader. It was annoying taking a class where the material was quite easy and receiving back grades on assignments that I feel were marked off more than necessary.
