Really disliked this class. The PLIR component is not quite as bad. It is a ton of work but you are tested on so little of the material you waste a lot of time. There is little order. Lectures jump from country to country era to era with no connection. The few dominating themes are important but not very helpful. Only take if it is a necessity to fulfill the PLIR major.
This class was awesome. I learned so, so much about the middle east. Yes, there is a ton of reading, lots of which probably isn't necessary to do well in the course, but you get a lot more out of it if you do the reading. Professor Quandt knows his stuff. Take this class if you're interested in the region!
Excellent class. There is no TA or discussion, so that seems scary. But you really don't need one. The readings are long and overwhelming but so worth it. One midterm and one final. You walk into this class scared out of your mind of the workload and walk out with enough knowledge about the Middle East to discuss it with ease. Great way to get informed. Quandt is retiring this summer, but the professor who will take over, Schulhofer-Wohl, seems very, very knowledgeable and lays out the lecture efficiently.
