I love love Professor Fatton. Although the readings are a lot, you can get away with doing little reading. Just make sure to go to class, and pay attention to lectures. The exams are very straightforward and easy. But make sure you take it with a good TA. I had a solid A on my midterm but that only counted for 15%. I also did pretty well on my final. While I put on a lot of effort on my paper, Lisa gave me a low C. If you are going to write a paper on globalization, make sure that Lisa agrees with your argument. Anyways, I ended up with a B for the class, but I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a foreigh affairs major.
I really enjoyed this class! The readings were a little long but only a few were dry. Sometimes Fatton is difficult to take notes on and at times some readings seem extraneous. Overall though, this class actually changed my point of view on political institutions and persuaded me to explore further the politics of developing areas! Overall, definitely take this class- You will learn a lot.
This is a great class! The material is really interesting and opened up my view on the political and historical context behind developing countries. The readings are mostly boring, you can easily get away without doing them. If you don't do the readings, definitely go to lecture, but don't skip on the readings and the lectures. Do one or the other. There's only a midterm, 10 page paper, and final, and the paper is almost half your grade. But I would definitely recommend this class.
I loved this class. Fatton is probably the most cynical guy I've ever met. Sometimes he'd ask questions in class and people looked at him like he was crazy, but apart from that it was a great class. He's on sabbatical next year so that's kind of tragic. Marina was a solid TA. The only thing I'd say is the midterms are easy, but it's better if you actually study for them (contrary to Fatton's advice). The TAs are generally harsher than him. The big research paper is hugely hit and miss so make sure to work hard on it!
The class is not too hard at all. The midterm and final asked you to answer really broad questions with plenty of freedom to maneuver. The 10-page paper can be a topic of your choice which makes things easy as well. Most of the reading can be accomplished by skimming and you can afford to miss a class every now and then.
Professor Fatton was a great lecturer, and his class wasn't overly difficult. He is well-informed and relatively enthusiastic about what he teaches. The reading seems a little excessive, but it lightens after the first few weeks. You should go to class, but most of the reading could be skimmed.
The Midterm (15%) and Final (25%) were easy and broad. Both were answering two of four essay questions in 50 minutes. The paper (45%) is on a topic of your choice and by far the most heavily weighted part of the course.
Lisa is a great TA and a fair grader. She really knows what she's talking about.
This was a very eye opening course. The reading was very interesting although long. For the most part, you get everything you need to know from lecture and may need to read for the discussions in order to effectively contribute. Fatton is a straight forward lecturer and the content is fairly interesting. Anand Rao was an effective TA and I would highly recommend him. Discussions were interesting and helpful. The exams were pretty straight forward. If you went to lecture and did some if not most of the reading, you can get at least a B+ in the class. Great course and I recommend it to any major, especially for those interesting in global development and the problems that come along with poverty
