Very interesting and thought provoking subject material. Either go to class or do the reading, but not both. Fatton, while being a good lecturer, posseses a french/haitian accent that put me right to sleep. I chose to do the reading instead of going to lecture, and likely made the course much more difficult as it is well over 1000 pages for the semester. Beware, one 10 page paper counts for 45% of the grade. Marina Omar was a great TA
Some of the readings are a little ridiculous to the point where my TA would simply say so point blank and treat discussion like a supplementary lecture. This was actually as, if not more, helpful than the lectures themselves. Brenton was an incredible TA, definitely try and get him if you can. Fatton is an interesting lecturer but definitely his accent can be a bit too thick at times. The paper isn't bad and it gives you a lot of freedom, basically choosing whatever topic you want to talk about. Worthwhile class overall.
I enjoyed this class very much. The material is very interesting and Fatton presents it in an interesting way. If you really want to learn more about development, take this class. Workload consists of a midterm, final and a 10 page paper. Grading is very fair and the midterm and final were pretty simple.
