Great Professor, interesting demonstrations, and I feel that this class is the best for anyone who has not taken physics before for learning about physics. There are some people who already have a good understanding of physics before taking this course and take it for a good grade, somewhat shifting the grade distribution of the class. He provides all the previous midterms and finals, and taking these are essential to doing well on the exam as there are many recycled questions for the midterms and finals.
Professor Bloomfield is so fantastic - he just cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. He makes lecture fun too with modules and experiments. Lecture slides and videos are posted to Collab if you dont go. First two tests very easy but last final can be difficult. No physics experience needed #tcf2016
Professor: Mr. Bloomfield is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is so accesible and genuinely wants everyone to learn/enjoy his class. He is insanely smart and is definitely one of those professors that you just have to meet.
Class: He does really cool demonstrations in class that will wake you up if you're falling asleep (lecture can get a little boring). Not going to lie, less than half the class actually shows up most of the time. This class is definitely not for science people. It's very basic and starts at the beginning.
Tests: There are 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final. About every week or so there will be one 10-20 question problem set that you do online. They aren't hard and you can work with anyone to do them. He literally posts all his midterms and finals (with answers and VIDEO explanations) online. If you practice them before a midterm you will do well.
Office hours: Really helpful during office hours, not many people go compared to the amount of people in the class.
Drawback: The class can be really boring sometimes (until he does a cool presentation). The material starts to fuzz together eventually so you should stay on top of it.
Textbook: All you need is the online version for the problem sets, not too expensive. You genuinely don't need to buy the physical copy. PS he wrote the book (did I mention he is a physics genius ?? Take the class and you'll see).
Workload: Super light, you can make it has hard or as easy as you want it to be. The bare minimum would be to only turn in problem sets (which I don't recommend). The best way to go would be to read and understand the material so that you are ready for any of his test questions, which basically focus on applying basic concepts of conceptual physics.
Overall: Look over chapter, go to office hours for extra explanation (if needed) and do the practice tests - you'll be 100% golden. If you dread anything having to do with science, I wouldn't necessarily say you'd enjoy it, but it is a really good class in that it knocks out part of the math/science requirement. Also, no math involved !!!
Professor Bloomfield is an awesome professor. His presentations keep you engaged, and the material is pretty easy to understand. Reading the textbook isn't necessary if you go to class. If you don't understand the topics, then just watch the videos on the textbook website. The best way to study for the tests is by doing the practice tests. Just put some effort into the class and you will do well.
Bloomfield is by far the best professor I have met in college. He is so understanding. The class is basically three tests and ten problem sets which account for 70% and 30% of your grade. The problem sets are really hard and Bloomfield does not help you with them so be prepared to spend some time on them. The class itself is interesting but I ended up not going to the majority of them. Take this class just for the professor. You will not regret it.
He doesn't teach physics in the same way that other physics professors do. Basically every class has a demonstration and he clearly seems very interested in the subject matter. The only issue is that the unconventional teaching method makes it hard to seek help from outside sources because even Physics majors can't really do the problems he gives.
I love this class! Professor Bloomfield is so fun, engaging, and enthusiastic. He really cares about the students, tries to learn everyone's names (even in a 200 person lecture) and is always happy to explain things in office hours. I actually found the problem sets somewhat difficult, but go to office hours and he'll give you the answers so you can still get 100s. The only grades are 10 problem sets, two midterms and a final. He gives all the past tests for the midterms and finals, so literally all you have to do is study those and you should be golden for the exams (he recycles questions).
