Basic Real Analysis, sounds easy no? Wrong, there is nothing basic about this class. Proving sequences, series, limits, derivatives and integrals is serious business that requires knowledge of the subject material. This class is easily one of the most difficult and uncomfortable math classes you will take, especially if you've never done a proof based math course.
Don't worry though, Laesicka is here to SAVE you. Laesicka understands this is a hard class and works you through it, she takes this class and translates it to something that is actually understandable and much needed considering the book is a piece of garbage. She moves through the course at an appropriate pace, about 1 or 2 sections a week, and she practically helps you with all the weekly homework assignments. She also bases all her quizzes on the weekly homework...aka literally uses problems from it. Tests are also very fair, she gives out a test review sheet before every test with a fair amount of practtice problems. The problems are very representative of what types of problems will show up on the test. She does not use those actual problems for the test like she does with the HW and quizzes however.
Set up of the class is pretty standard. 10% HW (1 drop), 10% quizzes (1 drop), 25% midterms (2) and a 30% final. However, she does throw a few curve balls. At the end of the semester she offered a system where HW and quizzes were 15% each (but no drops) and the 2 midterms counted 35% each, meaning there was no final. Practically the entire class elected this grading option. Also, to control grades she made an a 95%+, so be ready.
In the end Laesicka is your best bet for surviving basic real with a decent grade. She is fair, nice and understanding. The only thing i would've done differently is to have taken transition to higher level mathematics (MATH 3000) before this class, because losing your proof virginity to this class is not fun.
I found this class particularly difficult since I prefer more application-based math. Only took this since it was required for the math major. Lasiecka was an alright professor - kind of hard to understand her accent at times. Looking back, I probably should have put in more effort but the subject was so dry it was hard to sit there for more than an hour at a time without dozing off.
The only reason I had to take this class is because I am a math minor. Going into it, I had heard great things about Lasiecka; however, I disagree with most of it. You actually cannot hear what she is saying if you sit more than two rows back. She is not a good teacher, her lessons are very scattered and she just basically goes over examples in the book and homework questions. This was my least favorite and most confusing class I've ever taken at UVA, and I almost dropped the math minor because of it.
Lasiecka is incredibly kind and she is a great teacher. She speaks very quietly and has a bit of an accent, but after a while, you will get used to this. Her tests are very fair and she provides practice questions for each. Take this class with her instead of Ramirez. There are some pretty big weekly homework assignments, but she will be a big help in office hours and will do some problems in class.
