Daniel Quinn is a great person, and I highly recommend taking his class. His fluid mechanics course has been my FAVORITE class at UVA by far. He does great illustrations for visual learners and easy-to-follow derivations. He also heavily cares about his students success and grades in his course. I cannot say enough good things, really.
Both Professor Quinn and Professor Simpson were very methodical in their teaching. I really appreciated that when introducing a new topic, they spent time to make sure that we understood from a physical standpoint what was going on, and then the equations would be derived so we could make that mental connection between the mathematics and the real world physical phenomena. I also appreciated how when things got more difficult and complicated, Professor Quinn and Professor Simpson made sure to re-emphasize the important concepts that were continuities between the old and new problems, and how it was just building on what we had learned earlier. The course covered a lot of material, but everything was explained very clearly and I never found myself feeling lost during the lectures. The slides and animations really grabbed my attention and made it easy to understand concepts. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this class and wish to thank Professor Quinn and Professor Simpson for a fantastic experience.
Fluids was a fun class! Dan is really passionate about the subject. A lot of the problems he covered in class were real world applications, which made it really interesting. He also explains things very thoroughly. Even though the subject itself can get rigorous, he is available during office hours for extra help.
Oh, everyone loves Dan. He is really great at explaining topics and covering all the bases to make sure the whole class understands what is going on. The material is very interesting and you get to solve a lot of cool, real world problems. Go to lecture and pay attention and supplement with the book to really figure out what is going on.
Dan Quinn is amazing. He is really passionate about fluid mechanics which is so nerdy but he actually works to make sure his students understand the material, he does A LOT of derivations and some examples on the board every class so it's important to pay attention/take good notes. He does a fluid mechanics symposium on the last day of classes where you look at extra credit assignments (which you should do its super easy/fun) and brought cookies for everyone. He also added a huge curve to the class (my grade literally got bumped up a whole letter grade). The tests can be hard/long but if you put effort in its doable to get a B without a whole lot of stress.
