Musical Fictions was an enjoyable class that offered a fascinating look at the different musical styles of rock, pop, calypso, jazz, mambo, and reggae, and the cultures they represent. Professor Hamilton really is invested in the course material and enjoys teaching it, especially the reggae unit. Reading was generally between 150-250 pages per week depending on how long the book was. I wasn't the fastest reader, so it took me a while, and the time you'll spend depends on your reading speed. Writing assignments were four 750-1000 word essays throughout the semester and a 2000-3000 word final paper. Grappling with the complex themes of a studied book was not easy, but definitely rewarding, and knowing music theory helps to discuss the technical aspects. TL;DR: do the reading, participate in class, ask Professor Hamilton questions you have about the course or assignments, and you should do well.
