This class was easily of of my favorite classes I have taken so far at UVA. Dr. Gelsdorf takes you the history, ethical elements and policy implications of humanitarian crisis response. Class is kept incredibly interesting through group discussion and guest lectures from humanitarian actors around the globe, usually through Skype (: Dr. Gelsdorf intentionally gives manageable, but important, reading assignments that help you gain a broader understanding of the global humanitarian response landscape. Then, you are asked to apply this knowledge into 3 timed, policy assignments and a final debate. These assignments mimic the real-world, in that it is the type of concise writing and speech many of us would be expected to produce in the international relations field soon after graduation. Lastly, for the graduate seminar, the final memo is an incredibly engaging opportunity to research and argue a position on a policy issue of your passion. From my personal experience, this class is worthwhile and comes highly, highly recommended!
