Prof. Rawson is a phenomenal teacher who is very articulate and knowledgeable. His class is hard and he'll make you work for a high grade, but it's definitely worth it. I'm a STEM major, so I won't be doing a ton of professional writing, but I still feel like what I've learned from Rawson is invaluble.. He teaches writing very well, which I'm sure a lot of ENWR professors do, but he also teaches how to think critically, independently, and originally. If you're just looking for easy A, look for somebody else, but if you'd rather be challenged and learn a ton of valuable skills, he's the professor to have.
The class involves about 1-2 hours of reading every few weeks (one set of readings per writing project) and three writing projects. During each writing project, Professor Rawson uses a combination of peer review (with guiding questions to make the reviews more effective) and lectures on specific writing techniques. Over the course of this class, my writing skills noticeably improved and I learned how to manage my time with longer-term projects better. Professor Rawson is a brilliantly knowledgeable and passionate professor. He clearly cares about his class and gives extensive feedback to every student. He is easy to reach via email and during office hours. The advice he gave me was tailored to my shortcomings and gave me a specific idea of how to improve and a realistic target for the end of the semester. Although Professor Rawson is not an easy grader, an A in this class is very achievable if you learn from the feedback you are given. #tCFF24
This is a great ENWR to take if you're looking to actually improve your writing skills and get good practice writing college-level papers. At first, professor Rawson's criteria may seem daunting as he has very high writing standards. However, he is easily accessible with office hours multiple times a week and quick email responses.
You'll write 3 total papers for this class, ranging from 4-7ish pages each. While you don't get a letter grade on them as a collective until the end of the semester, Professor Rawson gives meticulous and very helpful feedback throughout the semester. In-class peer review is also pretty helpful.
Rawson is super knowledgeable about the subject and genuinely wants to help his students become better professional writers.
Overall, there are definitely easier ENWRs to take, but this one is probably the very best you could take in order to prepare yourself to write papers in future classes.
