The course is pretty self explanatory. If you put in some level of effort then you can get an A/A-. The textbook isnt necessary, probably don't buy it because the Cognella website has all the vocab flashcards already on it and the practice quizzes which are all you need for the exams. Attending class is honestly optional, you won't really gain much except for the "take aways" which appear on exams and while Kemp basically just repeats whatever he wrote in the book in class, he is engaging and happy and genuinely wants you to learn something so its not boring. I can't say I really learned a whole lot but I would say I have an overview on some of the elements that go into making a business which was all I wanted.
Basically COMM 1100 is Kemp trying to do his own COMM 1800, which he was in charge of until Leopold got it. Kemp's lectures were generally extremely boring apart from some of the guest lectures which were alright. Overall, the course content wasn't extremely difficult but there were some pretty difficult concepts, particularly the accounting portion leading up to the second exam. Kemp is a nice guy, but not the greatest lecturer. He doesn't explain difficult concepts well and that's really where he goes wrong. The exams are 100 questions which is ridiculous, and a lot of the information is in the textbook, but some of the information is on the Cognella interactive website. The class is meant to be a broad introductory business course for students not interested in going into business. If you're a first or second year student who wants to learn about business, take COMM 1800 with Leopold, not this class. If you're a third or fourth year then choose wisely. I would not recommend this class.
COMM 1100 is a good class to take if you're trying to fulfill a requirement or have an easy class to fill a spot. I'm glad I'm taking it and gaining some business knowledge. Professor Kemp is so sweet and really cares about his students. The lectures are a bit boring and not super informative, but not bad at all. The tests seem to be mainly composed of questions from the Cognella practice quizzes, so I recommend using those to study. I also find the textbook to be pretty helpful considering that it's written by Professor Kemp. The one thing that's iffy about this class is that the grading is only the 3 tests, which are worth 33.3% each. So you really have to do well on the tests to get a good grade in the class, and one bad test grade will really set you back. Overall, this is a decent class. I wouldn't say you absolutely need to or should take it, but if you have a spot to fill, you might as well.
Professor Kemp is a great lecturer and an even better person! He genuinely cares about his students and wants to help you understand the material by telling funny stories and relating things to you and your life. The class covers the basics of accounting, finance, banking, etc. and I think it is a must take for everyone because you learn the basic understanding of many topics. Definitely recommend as the workload is minimal (reading) and the exams are straightforward.
Do not recommend. Took it to see if I was interested in business and instead I despise it. The class consists of Kemp just lecturing every single class. You could honestly never go to class and learn the same thing: nothing. The entire class is based off of 3 exams (33%, 33%, and 34%). The exams are insanely hard and difficult for absolutely no reason at all and every single time before an exam. No curve. Took this class as a fun exploration class... However Kemp is such a sweet man and seems nice
I absolutely loved Professor Kemp. He is an amazing person and you can tell how much he genuinely cares about the subject and his students learning. This is a great course to take if you want a general overview of business but are not thinking about going into the COMM school. The workload is minimal and it's a great class to take if you need a lighter/easier course. He's the best!
