Took this class as a break from my science coursework as a premed student. This class is mostly made up of kids in greek life and athletes. It's honestly pretty interesting but can get repetitive at times. Went to every lecture, took notes (most of the time), and would get together with my friends to make a study guide the weekend before the exam. Also went to all the review sessions. Honestly the tests weren't exactly common sense but definitely nothing compared to any science/history/econ class. I ended up with an A-
I would not recommend this class! That being said, there were some highlights - I really enjoyed TA Terry Hanlon's lectures, and the frequent guest speakers were moderately interesting. However, the exams were a lot harder than I expected. Like previous reviewers have said, they ask questions about such small details. Even when I thought I did well, I never got better than a B or B-. The lectures were so boring, and it was a struggle just to stay awake in class. I thought the class would be intriguing since the topic was athletics, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Also, the grading scales were so arbitrary. I got a 27.61 out of 30 on my group project - what???
This class was not interesting and was extremely repetitive. The articles were long. You were expected to memorize up to 15 articles per exam, and there were four exams. The questions were vague on the exams, and in order to do well, you needed to know tiny details about each article. There were multiple professors and I frankly was not impressed by most of them. Sorry to be so negative, but I would not recommend this class!!!!!! I feel like I wasted a lot of time on this class and regret taking it.
Your grade is added up from a total of 100 points. I ended up with an 89.75-- and let's just say they were not into the idea of helping me earn that extra .25 points.
I took this course to free up extra time in my schedule for the semester. This class is not even worth the time required by the group project which the professors grade arbitrarily. The tests do not require that you learn or understand the material so much as that you memorize what is on line 6, paragraph 5 of page 64 or that you know exactly what was listed on their powerpoints on sessions x, y, and z. While this course used to offer extra credit, they have stopped doing so and do not round up grades under any circumstances. Some are speculating that this change in class policy was a result of its track record of inflated grades. At any rate, this class is not worth while, and I recommend looking elsewhere before taking this class.
The structure and grading breakdown of the class includes 4 midterms totaling to 60% of your grade, a group project which constituted 30% of your grade, and participation (clicker questions) which made up the remaining 10%.
This class was interesting, many guest speakers, and not too difficult. The tests were often tricky and harder than the material discussed in lecture, but I still received an A- in the class without studying that much. Overall, I would recommend this class, especially if you're looking for a lighter workload class.
