I don't know how to describe this class other than "it was fine." There wasn't anything too special about it. Class was canceled half the time and the homework was light outside of the essays. The class consists of a comparative rhetorical analysis, an evaluation essay, a proposal essay, and an annotated bibliography. With that being said, 90% of your grade comes from essays (the other 10% is homework/participation) and Professor Abry doesn't use a rubric when he grades, so getting an A is pretty difficult. It's a very chill class, but I would recommend an ENWR that's an easier A.
I enjoyed this English class and recommend it. It is a relaxed class, and Professor Abry is very understanding. He does take note of those who are dedicated to the class and put in appropriate effort. The grading is mostly essay-based, with a participation aspect included as well. It was very helpful to attend office hours and receive feedback on my essay drafts before submitting them. Overall, I had a positive experience in this course!
Some of the mandatory core classes at UVA can feel like a drag, but Professor Abry’s ENWR course was anything but that. He is incredibly kind and understanding, and he recognizes how challenging the transition from high school–level writing to college writing can be. I felt genuinely supported as he guided his students through that process. His writing prompts were fairly open-ended, which gave students the opportunity to explore topics they were personally interested in which was something I really enjoyed. I was able to write an essay analyzing my favorite TV show, as well as an essay discussing issues I was passionate about. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and found it to be an extremely helpful introduction to the level and quality of writing expected at UVA, which continued to benefit me in my later courses. I recommend!
