The course examines the development of the Spanish language through texts produced from the Middle Ages to the present day. The main goal will be the interpretation of individual texts as a source of linguistic data and the analysis of language in its cultural, social and historical context. The purpose of this course is to help the student read and understand poetry in Spanish. By approaching the works of relevant Spanish and Latin American poets from different perspectives, the student will become more familiar with poetry in Spanish. Part of the course is dedicated to introducing the student into the creative mood of literature by doing some poetry translating.

Cultural history of Spanish cinema covering the basics of film analysis and introducing a diverse array of approaches to studying movies. Students will view feature-length films and complete readings in Spanish. Class discussions will be in Spanish.
