An overview of psychotherapy process and outcome research, ethnicity issues in psychotherapy and ethical considerations. Begins the survey of adult psychotherapy. Emphasizes a problem-focused, rather than a treatment-focused perspective. Three lecture hours, practicum in supervised intervention. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.

Topics include strategies of assessment, issues of reliability and validity, test construction; theory and practice of individual, couple, family, and community assessment techniques, including testing, interviewing, observation; and assessment research. In this graduate seminar, we will take a close look at concepts and theoretical perspectives emerging from and guiding the field of community psychology including empowerment, resilience, critical race theory, Black feminism, intersectionality, critical consciousness, and sociopolitical resistance. This course will encourage students to apply these frames to critically examine their own research.
