Institutions and Democracy in Latin America

Course Description

Pre-Requisite(s): prior course in PLCP

This course examines the causes and consequences of variation in democratic institutional structure in contemporary Latin America. We study how institutions such as presidentialism, electoral rules, federalism, party systems, and the legal system contribute to outcomes such as political instability, legislative representation, clientelism and corruption, citizen security, and overall support for democracy.
