This course is amazing and Professor Cox is the one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are so fascinating, well-organized, and engaging. The powerpoint slides have all the information you need to know. The course structure also makes so much sense and he uses great examples to help us understand everything. The papers we had to read before every class were always really short and extremely interesting (and usually easy to understand as well). I would highly recommend this course to anyone even remotely interested in biology. I also really appreciate his questions on exams - they are smart, logical and require good application of the things you've learned. The professor himself is so kind and considerate and super accommodating (he records every lecture). I had a great time in this course and if I could take it again I would. The grade depends on short quizzes based on the papers, a couple of group activities, two midterms and a cumulative final. #tCFfall2022
Professor Cox is amazing. If you've taken BIOL 3020, you already know this. He's a great lecturer and a genuine guy (he learned all of my class' names without us ever introducing ourselves, still a mystery as to how he did this <3). There were 2 midterms and a cumulative final. One thing about Prof Cox, everything you need to know is written on the slides he provides in class. Exams were quite fair, but you do need to study quite a bit just because each exam is on a lotttttt of 75 min long lectures. This class didn't require much work outside of studying for exams (which were infrequent). The weeks after the midterms were used for group discussions of current evolutionary biology topics (easy grade boosters). The material is also so interesting! Take this class, especially for a bio elective!
Even if you aren't a huge fan of evolutionary bio, I would HIGHLY recommend this course! Professor Cox is a fantastic lecturer, as his lectures are engaging and very clearly organized. You have a homework assignment due before each class which involves answering 4-5 questions about a short piece of primary literature that pertains to the topic of the next lecture. The papers are all very interesting, and the questions are challenging enough to force you to read, but not so challenging that the assignments become tedious. You are assessed in two mid-terms and one cumulative final. All exams are extremely fair, and if you've been doing the work and consistently showing up to lecture you will do just fine. This class really made me look at the world differently and wound up being my favorite class of the semester!
