I took this seminar with Bremen and really wasn't sure to expect. Though I know the teachers and topics fluctuate, I figured this review can help out others who have no idea what the majors seminar is like. Firstly, the reading is dense and heavy. At times, it can be very confusing and you might just feel like you've had to read something 3 times to understand it -- this is completely normal. This type of class is meant to challenge you and meant to make you think of your studies in the Anthro department/major collectively, and I would say that Bremen definitely accomplished that. We really didn't have any formal homework, instead just to finish the readings so we could participate and talk about them.
- There are often 2 or 3 short-essays that are maybe 3 pages in length (750 words), plus perhaps an introductory assignment (since we're on Zoom and it's hard to get to know one another or make friends through the computer), and then we spend class analyzing the themes/points/ideas of the readings. There's also a final paper in the end which is about 12-16 pages or 4000 words in length. Definitely write about a subject that you're passionate about, and be creative with the topic of your choosing. When I first started this class, I had no idea how I'd write a 4000 word paper! But I did it, and it wasn't too bad.
Bremen herself is a nice person for sure. The interactions can be a bit awkward sometimes, and through Zoom, things can be misconstrued especially during discussion or conversation. However, she is very nice, very sweet, and super understanding. This class isn't by any means an easy A. You definitely have to work for it, and you have to work HARD! However, Bremen is fair and the hard work does pay off.
