I really enjoyed the material, and Kingston does a good job of facilitating meaningful, lively discussions. To actively contribute to the discussions, you need to do the reading on a weekly basis, but there's no test on the material. You write four 5-6 page essays over the semester, but you get to choose from a list of eight essay prompts. To do well in the class, I'd suggest meeting with Kingston to discuss each essay; I found that I did best on the papers that I had talked through with him. Basically, challenging class, but relevant and engaging.
You have to attend class. For every absence (even if excused), you have to write an extra paper. Kingston also sends you little assignments to do before most classes. They only take a few minutes, but you have to do the readings for each of them. This class is very boring. I found the material interesting, but the professor teaches it in a boring manner. You are only graded on participation and four five-page papers. If you want a light second-writing, take this course.
