If this course had a review on Course Forum that told me about it, I wouldn't have taken it. Not only is the course material very dry, but Professor Roksa's lecture is even more dry. I also have a problem with how the course is designated as a lecture and not a seminar. The class has 20 students and Professor Roksa demanded that students lead our own discussion for 90% of each class period, which is definitely more of a seminar than a lecture. The times that Professor Roksa did lecture, nobody gained much from the lectures because 1) her lecture was so dry and/or 2) the purpose of the lecture was to correct our mistakes that she saw on our writing assignments. As it's a 4000-level Sociology course, sociological writing is to be expected, but Roksa's grading seemed needlessly nit-picky, even in a sociological framework. I took this class as a Sociology major, so I recommend other Sociology majors take a different class for your 4000-level requirement. A lot of students seemed to be in the Curry School, so if you're in the Curry School and thinking of taking this class, I wouldn't recommend. Much of the material was repetitive and you could probably find the same concepts in a lower-level Sociology course like Systems of Inequality or Social Problems. Overall, I do not recommend this course with Professor Roksa because her teaching and the material was boring and needlessly made difficult by her assignments and grading.
