Ma is a great professor and makes sure you understand everything clearly. She goes quickly sometimes, but if you just ask, she'll explain things to you. There are biweekly quizzes which are sometimes easy sometimes hard. I recommend taking time to study. Everything else is pretty straight forward and she prepares you for things well. The project doesn't teach much and really is not usually successful, but it's pretty easy and doesn't take much thought.
If you have to take this, take it with her (or Diana Morris of course). Hui Ma is amazing, mostly because she genuinely cares. She is also fairly straightforward with the material which can be pretty intimidating for anyone new to stat.
There is SO much material that this class covers - it covers 80% of material in STAT 2120 plus a lot of material on probability. Tests are a tad bit more tricky than what is on the hw, but generous with the grading. There is a weekly quiz, which was really annoying.
Finally, if you are a prospective econ major, I recommend taking this class instead of STAT 2120. Hui Ma is such a better professor, you'll be learning in a much smaller class, and most importantly, these exams don't fuck you over like they do in 2120.
Out of all the APMA professors I've had, Hui Ma has definitely been the best! She really made the course enjoyable for me and is great at teaching. The material is pretty straightforward too. Ended up with an A in the course. I really wish I had her for other APMA courses too.
She posts really nice online lecture notes and tells you exactly what to expect on the quizzes/exams. The fact that she takes the time to post lots of study material leading up to the exams & notifies us via email shows that she really does care.
I highly recommend Professor Ma; she is incredibly caring about the success of her students, and makes a genuine effort to thoroughly teach the material. However, I had previously taken AP Stat in HS, making this class much easier for me; I'm not sure how easy this class may be for someone without a background in statistics. Also, the HW assignments were very tedious at times, and could generally be more difficult than the examples in class.
