Gary is not a good professor. He puts minimal effort into his teaching and will barley help you when you ask questions in class or in office hours. He does a flipped classroom with videos to watch at home and classes are for working on worksheets. His videos are from several years ago and are not engaging whatsoever, He'll just read off of plain slides with only text on it and its really rough to get through. Take Deep if you can, he teaches R with the class, which makes it much more applicable and easier to understand. With that said, the class is fine, it's probably a requirement if you take it, so you can't get out of it. But its somewhat manageable, you're just mainly teaching yourself the whole class. #tCFF23
I am BME and took this class as a graduation requirement. I'll admit I've always struggled some in APMA classes and this one was no different. Its a flipped classroom so you watch videos before class and do worksheets in class. I found it difficult to stay on top of actually understanding the material because its easy to goof off with friends and try to speed through the worksheet. I had no previous background with probability or statistics but I found anyone who did got through the class a lot easier. Overall, it could have been a lot worse and if you put in the work, you'll do fine.
Professor Koenig himself was approachable and knowledgeable and I recommend his office hours for extra help since there are no clear TAs for the class.
The overall structure is in class worksheets due the next class day at midnight (which I thought was great) weekly webworks, occasional projects, 2 50 minute exams and a final.
This class was relatively difficult. However, that's not to say that I didn't have fun learning the material, which doesn't get too hard considered alone. The homework sets don't take very long to complete. Although the projects had unclear grading standards, weren't that much of a pain. The exams, however, were a different story. I don't know why, but every mistake had way too many points taken off and there were too many questions to complete in 50 minutes. Test averages were consistently in the low 70's, and there was a fairly large curve at the end of the semester (I got a B despite being wholly convinced I'd get something in the C range). If you're gonna take this class, just try your best and study hard for the tests. Koenig's a really nice guy from the Chemical Engineering department and he's definitely out for your best interests. Definitely not the hardest class I've taken, but then again, it certainly wasn't the easiest.
This class is very dense. You fly though material in class and can't really do much unless you do work at home and figure it out. Gary is a nice guy but def isn't a real math professor. He can explain well but with so much material it can be overwhelming. Just be ready to work on projects and WeBWork and study hard for exams.
