This is an amazing course. You will learn a lot about the tradition of the commedia dell'arte in Europe and understand how those stocl characters now permeate almost every aspect of modern comedy. The class is very easy (the lowest grade on one of the essays was an 88) and all you have to do is focus on absorbing the fascinating material. Professoressa Ward loves her material and you will too. Take this class!
If you are in any way interested in the study of comedy, TAKE THIS CLASS. Adrienne Ward is so enthusiastic about the material, and I promise that enthusiasm will transfer onto you. The prompt of the first paper was to choose any comedic work (stand up, music, tv, film) and analyze its humor. There is no other class where you can turn in a paper that you can write jokes in for a grade. The readings are Italian comedies of the commedia dell'arte tradition and the movies are hysterical. I'm so happy to have been introduced to Benigni, Goldoni, and Fo! True comedic geniuses. You get the option to perform an original piece of comedy (video, skit, stand up, etc.) and perform/show it to the class for a grade. That's right...for my final grade, I wrote a stand up set and performed it. This class will make you laugh and you'll fall in love. TAKE IT!
