Prof Kahlenberg is an incredibly kind and caring individual who wants every student to succeed. This is a very broad overview of Jewish history from 1492 to present, and the class had a wide range of prior knowledge. None of the material is particularly captivating, but it is presented well, and every reading and assignment felt like it belonged. Prof Kahlenberg led a lively discussion every class, and the broad set of knowledge, experience, and perspective made the class a real learning experience for everyone involved. Readings were always extremely light and manageable. The grade is based on participation, reading responses, two quizzes, a midterm and final paper/project, and an in-class presentation on a Jewish holiday/life event. The presentations were a lot of fun to work on, present, and watch, and the papers were not too difficult to work on and were quite interesting to research. The quizzes are also quite easy. Prof Kahlenberg was also very generous with deadlines and extensions, so if you have a legitimate stress about some deadline, she will be understanding and work with you to get the work in. One important note: she is a very harsh grader on the presentations and papers. Be wary, and expect to do worse than you thought you did. Getting an A is not easy, but particularly for those less familiar with the material, it will be a rewarding experience. Overall, great instructor and a fine syllabus, but nothing special.
This course is amazing! Caroline is one of the kindest, most understanding professors I've had at UVA. The course is creatively designed and, if you're interested in history, super engaging. The workload is reasonable (weekly readings and discussion post, one mini-presentation, two easy mini-quizzes, and two writing projects) and she's fair with grading. Especially given current events, this course was so informative and well-taught. Recommend 1000%
