This was my favorite class this semester. It's co-taught by Gabriel Finder and Jeffrey Grossman, who are both incredibly intelligent and kind people. Even though the class is big, they really make an effort to get to know individual students. The class is sort of a survey of Jewish culture and history (mainly in Germany/Central Europe, but also in Eastern Europe) and it also fulfills the second writing requirement. Grading is split between ten one-page response papers (essentially pass/fail), one five-page midterm and a ten-page final research paper. It's totally manageable, especially for a 3000-level class. However, you definitely need to do the readings in order to follow along in class and actually get something out of it.
